    Re-thinking homelab

Hey team! Here is what I have as my current setup: Dell R620:HBA->NetApp. Running the TrueNAS Scale on a bare metal, a whole bunch of containers, managed by Portainer. CoreDNS, Traefik and all the good stuff. The capacity tier is on NetApp in a ZFS pool. It runs couple backup tasks to Google and...

    Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro EN (MCX314A-BCCT)

One more dumb question - can it be used with 10GbE switch? Like a reversed connection - 4x10 breakout cable from NIC to 4 ports on the switch, where it's aggregated to 40GbE. UniFi in particular. I saw the post on STH main, about the advise to use the QSFP to SFP adapter and that in general...

    Help me with NetApp

One more Q: What is a Netapp NAJ-1502? I don't know enough about the NetApp. Sounds like it's a controller. What's it for? Is that a SAN of sorts? Is it useful for homelabbers?

    Help me with NetApp

Hi team! I am looking for a storage solution for my updated server. Currently I run a NetApp DS4246 with LSI SAS2308 HBA. The goal is to have more modern solution. Preferably with SAS12G. Here is what I am trying to figure out: NetApp product lines: The classic - DS4(U)24(Drives) 6(SAS6) all...

Upgrade from R620 to R640 and JBOD options

Not much traffic in here... I hoped it would be bit more active. What else people use for massive-ish data storage? I thought the smart JBOD is an optimal solution. It's cheap, fast and reliable. But it seems most of uses are bouncing between NetApp and Dell MD1200.

Upgrade from R620 to R640 and JBOD options

Hey team! TLDR: Planning a new box, I want a SAS12 enclosure. Aslo, how do we host a bunch of containers and a ZFS? Bare metal or virtualized? First, let me describe what I have, what I love and what I want improved. I got an R620 dirt cheap with 368Gb RAM, bumped CPUs to 12C's (max possible)...

Dell R640 NVMe. What do I miss?

Smartctl gives me this: I think it's better to return this one.

Dell R640 NVMe. What do I miss?

Digging through the dmesg That's it. lsscsi doesn't see anything: nvme list gives me empty. Nothing about the sector size. Seems like a dead SSD to me.

Dell R640 NVMe. What do I miss?

That's a great idea. I will try it first thing tomorrow. PS: That M.2 to U.2 adapter is no good. I plugged it into PCIe slot and it does the same. Slot shows empty. I will try a different M.2 drive. One I have it there is ancient it was the first Samsung PCIe NVMe. Perhaps it's bit too old.

Dell R640 NVMe. What do I miss?

Hi team! More of my R640 adventures. I got it with 10x2.5 SAS configuration, with H730p RAID. Idea is to add the 2-5 and 6-9 cables to use it in full NVMe ZFS. I am getting some bumps in a road with it. I got cables, 6-9 first, 2-5 later, when the first cable seemed to work. DC P3600 from eBay...

Will the SAS12 work with SAS6 disk shelf?

Hi team! I am planning an update to my existing NAS, that is currently connected to NetApp DS4246. I have a dell R640 that needs an HBA for that connection. So I wonder, if it makes sense to go with SAS12 HBA? The reason is to future-proof and to have longer/better support in future ESXi. The...

    Help with Dell R640 retrofit

Yup. I have these as well. But they don't post part numbers anywhere. I could swear, I remember the same manual for my old R620 had a list of all the part numbers, compatible with the configuration. I guess, they don't like homelabbers any more. My hope was may be to find some internal Dell...

    Help with Dell R640 retrofit

I am trying to figure out the R640 NVMe backplane. How it looks right now: Backplane is connected to PERC: The goal is to use the NVMe drives in front bays and use HBA to connect to external enclosure. So I am trying to figure out what part numbers do I need and how to make any sense out of...

Questions about JBOD shelf, ZFS and so on

Hi team! I guess the HBA forum is the closest one to ask this. I have a Synology RS with an expansion unit and I was quite happy with it. But lately, I picked up a great deal on R620 with 384Gb RAM to offload resource-intensive containers from NAS. That worked quite well, so it made me think -...
