Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

The new R8S-N will have an Intel Core i3-N305 so it should be very comparable at least based on expected passmarks.

Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

I had been looking at Omada but their forums have almost as many issues as the Unifi ones, maybe I will take a second look but they don't have a 6E in wall equivalent at the moment. Their software is also a clone of unifi for the most part. Reading the fine print the lifetime warranty applies...

Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

Going back to my original post I have been running UAP-AC-PROs for close to 7 years, this revamp should be the basis for another 5+ years baring some massive tech breakthrough. This is also why I want to have the 6Ghz channel and not just go with WiFi 6 on 2.4/5Ghz as there are already problems...

Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

I already run a few mini PCs for things like Frigate and HomeAssistant.. Going up to a more modern one that can fit a PCIe card pushes the cost WAY up locally, typically more than the R8S devices at that is without also counting the SFP+ card. I do keep an eye out on eBAY but selection in...

Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

Don't you mean greater than gigabit? Main reason for the complete upgrade is really the desire to support 6E, and as nearly all 6E APs can support throughput of greater than 1Gbit they tend to be 2.5Gbit, which then requires a 2.5Gbit or greater switch etc, etc. ISP wise I am already at 1Gbit...

Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

I should note that I am located in Canada not the US, so most of those EBAY options are much more costly to ship to Canada IF they ship to Canada. Supermicro X11 - I didn't explicitly say it but SPACE / HEAT / POWER matter, not interested in running a big 1U server. Ruckus H550 / Ruckus H350...

Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

Well I appreciate the suggestions but I think you have more than doubled the cost of every component making it completely impractical. Creating sub interfaces and tagging them to vLANs really isn't hard in OPNSense... I already do this, really no change in this proposed setup other than both...

Thoughts on complete home network revamp Firewall/Switch/WiFi

I am moving into a newer / larger home shortly that already has network cabling to most rooms. I currently have 1Gig/1Gig Fibre to the home and services up to 3Gbit are available but not planning to go that high unless there is a promo. FW: NEW R8S-N series (pending availability / reviews) I...

    R86s Router

FYI there is now a subreddit r/R86SNetworking Some info in there indicates R86S-Tand R86S-U models by the end of April and an Alder Lake-N100 version will be launched at the end of May.

I would recommend looking at the recommended hardware for the projects that provide AP features that are already being promoted for use with the R86S.. OpenWRT, OPNSense requires a device that has BSD drivers that support infrastructure mode related related opnsense forum topic.

FLIP side anecdote the barrel plug on my sons MSI laptop had the center pop out within the first 3 months of owning it.. MSI didn't ask any questions and fixed it right away... Looking online it is apparently common on that model. A crappy quality plug is still a crappy quality plug. For a...

    1. I am more likely to be carrying a USB_PD power supply with me already if I am traveling. 2. VERY easy to get reputable / to spec USB-PD powers supplies these days, maybe even have one kicking around Of note a lot of the AliExpress firewalls STH recently reviewed they did power supply tests...

    R86s Router

Not sure if anyone noticed but it looks like GOWIN replied in the youtube comments stating that a U and T variant are also in the works. @gowinfanless @steelfalconx2000 We plan to invite Jeff to review another model of our GW-R86S series, that will be our U or T model which we still didn't...

    R86s Router

I highly suspect I can get away with the lower spec G2 version, but feeling really uneasy about what adding some DNS filtering or some client based OpenVPN or Wiregaurd tunnels will do to over all performance or what realistic throughput would be. The iPerf tests don't tell a complete story in...

    R86s Router

I see this device trunked to a switch on a 10gbit port DAC or Fiber being a big win to route between vLANs at greater than 1 Gbit speeds.

I am really interested in building a 2.5gbit+ (future proof, expecting 5gbit to be a thing in a year or so) home firewall. Opensense bare metal support (hoping both the 2.5 and 10gig ports work natively), as I am not too interested in running proxmox on it but would if it still performed well...

    R86s Router

On the surface the small form factor, 2x SFP+ and 2+ 2.5Gbe Ports are EXACTLY what I am looking for.. Fibre in my area now goes up to 2.5Gbit so I have been hunting around for a small form factor / reasonably priced solution to start upgrading my network. I do however also want to run some...
