Help a ZFS Noob select SAS drives for ZFS pool?

Ok I was originally trying to balance on the two cables to the HBA, I have since figured out that does not seem to matter. but what does mater is the air holes in the back plane vary wildly is size, and this makes a notable difference in drive temperature, also stacking one drive over another...

    Whitch distro for home server

I went with Debian 12 Bookworm, I have experience with its descendants Ubuntu and Mint, so when looking for something familiar but with more stability / cleaned up. Debian was an obvious choice. First tried with Gnome DE, that was defiantly not it, switched to XFCE and so far so good, got a...

announcing my "bulk hard drive testing" script for Linux on STH

If there is a hard existing hard fault in a particular sector first pass should find it, but if there is a problem that will only show as the drive wears in possibly not. I was after strong confidence in the drives and old surplus server hardware before I loaded my data on this setup (also...

announcing my "bulk hard drive testing" script for Linux on STH

There are 4 writes and 4 reads. the percent you are seeing is for one of them. 10min x 100=1,000 minutes x 8 operations 8000 min, /60 = 133 hours /24= 5.5 days, The outer bands of the disks are faster it slows a bit as you head for the inner cylinders I saw peaks of 250MB /s and lows in the...

Any reason for SAS over SATA in bulk storage (xxTB) HDDs

Suposedly there are advantages to SAS when you put many of them together, the drives, firmware & configuration are built for that environment, when you have a SAS backplane and the prices are similar SAS makes sense. But if you already have the bulk of the drive space you need in SATA drives...

14 TB SAS HDD *NEW* $135

I ran Badblocks on all the drives, full disk write and read 4 times, 56TB write/read per drive, 6 days. the post check smart data shows: 0-3 "corrected EEC errors" 1,000 to 7,000 "correction algorithm invocations" but the total uncorrected errors were all 0, bad blocks reported no errors as it...

Found an explanation for iostat behavior, it is in fact a multi hour lag after all. in this case a 141 hour average, 6 days https://jrs-s.net/2019/06/04/continuously-updated-iostat/ "when you call iostat, the first output is a reading that averages the stats for all devices since the first...

Help a ZFS Noob select SAS drives for ZFS pool?

Well top is sealed, fortunately all the drives are hot swap and accessible in place, I wound up springing for the swanky rear 2.5" hot swap also, for the OS drive, expensive but nice, may add a cache drive later, only need to pull out the server to gain entry to the fans, mother board, PCI...

announcing my "bulk hard drive testing" script for Linux on STH

I want to tank you for your channel it has been invaluable resource along with STH for someone like me starting out with server gear. Yes they all started the read/compare, I did not catch it at the end so they were all running writes one --status, then all reading the next, this was the last...

announcing my "bulk hard drive testing" script for Linux on STH

I ran iostat -d near the beginning of bht ~250MB/s x 9 = ~2.2GB/s in total?! it tapered down to about 170MB/s towards the tail of the first write. The drives are 14TB SAS but the backplne HBA and motherboard etc are a decade old I am impressed by the writes even if it is a best case scenario...

Help a ZFS Noob select SAS drives for ZFS pool?

Fun note when you put a 4u case full of drives slone in a 1/4 rack that's not bolted to the ground. You need a jack stand to keep it from topling over when pulled out. That's it I need more servers for counterbalance!

Since these have gone up in price there is probably less interest but for posterity these drives look and report as brand new: (it took me about 3 hours to get this to work and yes 2 power cycles) $ sudo /usr/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/sda -d scsi # /dev/sda, SCSI device smartctl 7.3 2022-02-28...

Making partial progress, parts are trickling in, 9x 14TB drives are here, I still need some more drive tray dummies, I had to return the first set I ordered, they were advertised as the new hollow version but the old version is what I received. when the next set get here I can load up all the...
