wait, to confirm are you just using plain FreeNAS? because passthrough sounds like PCI passthrough, which is a common virtualization concept.
if you want this other server, that would be daisy chained to your workstation, to be accessible to the rest of the network, then your workstation would...
well I just got this motherboard from ebay pdneiman (the server store). It arrived in copious amounts of bubble wrap.
Initial impressions, after I assembled it into a bunch of leftover parts:
* a old HTPC microATX case

for instance I've got an older, higher wattage A10-7890k that can play fortnite somewhat reasonably.
the little embedded A10's seem to have less oomph though.
I have no idea. Maybe basic ping test, maybe subjective feelings of latency even doing something like remote desktop, or maybe performance over remote file shared like large transfers or a database or something.
Oh and.cpu utilization.during iperf3!
So this super old thread was super useful to me.
I recently picked up two of the Emulex oce11102-n-xi cards for $15 each off ebay.
I only put them in x16 slots so I didn't have any physical fit problems.
I DID have the problem of them showing "link down" and no lights on when I plugged in two...
