This is a quick one. Newegg currently has Toshiba X300 5TBs for $7 less than the Hitachi Deskstar NAS 4TBs. The Hitachis have a year longer warranty than the Toshibas, but the Toshibas are said to be quite fast (for spinning rust) and win big on $/tb across 9 units. Hopefully the firmware issues in the long thread here are over for the Hitachis.

Should I go Hitachi or Toshiba?

Im interested to hear everones feedback as well. I'm trying to decide between 10x5TB Toshibas or spend a little more and get 10x6TB HGST NAS drives.

Both have a beefy cache. Both have warranty. Both are 7200RPM. The NAS drive seems more versatile in the event that I decide I don't like FreeNAS. I would expect they could work in a hardware RAID configuration. But $45 per drive is a $450 total difference and I only end up with 8TB of additional space.

I only have 20 or so of both. I no longer use HDD speed as a purchasing criteria since they are now used almost exclusively for backups, ISO repositories and the like.

How's reliability been for you for the two lines?

I did not buy any X300 yet but I have quite a few of both the 3 and 5 TB variants of the previous Toshiba generation and they are rock solid for me. 24/7 md raid and ZFS.

Sample of one:
Noisy. Excessive noise during heavy READ, but not WRITE.
S.M.A.R.T. reports 52 degree Celsius

Doing RMA for replacement as of now.
