These switches are beyond loud. Must wear hearing protection when entering the room.

Man....I'd bite, but I just picked up a Cisco Nexus 5020p with 2 x 6 x 10gbe modules for a total of 52 10gbe ports at the same price.

What's latency like on 40GigE vs IB?
If you're using IPoIB rather than RDMA, then they will be very similar host stack latency. IB switches have much lower latency than Ethernet switches though (Mellanox 90ns - 200ns depending on switch model vs 285ns Gnodal).

If we're talking about 40G IB, then serialization delay would also be the same.

To summarize, if you're not using RDMA, RoCE, iWARP, or some other kernel bypass technology, then the primary latency difference should be switching delay, which is minimal in this comparison of Gnodal to Mellanox. However, the Gnodal is designed to be a low latency switch, whereas most are not. The differences will be bigger for most other Ethernet switches.

Edit: Just read the link provided by BackupProphet; VMA kernel bypass from Mellanox looks pretty slick, and free!

Damn any ballers use this for their home lab? If so.... do share lol
I picked one up briefly than ditched it. It was loud and and hot and had very little layer 3 functionality. Mellanox 60oo series infiniband and 1000 series ethernet switches can be had for about that price if you're patient. I'm currently running a z9000 32x40gbe switch in my homelab thats full layer 3. Patiently waiting for a 1000 series to pop up. The seller reffered to in this thread has roughly thirty gnodals the last time I checked. He's a fast talker but if you push him you can wear him down a bit. I talked to him on the phone for a while. He's got a lot of the 18x40gbe and the 40x10gbe + 8x40gbe. I think he also has one or two 72x10gbe. They're in Brooklyn. If you go outside of ebay they'll do $1000.00 If you can pick up with cash they'll do $900.
