whats the power usage on it for idle and load? I have 2 2tb on a freenas vm used for temp storage to other vms. would be good to replace those old 3.5 drives with 2.5 and lower power as well.

I am not going to get these in a rig to do power testing for some time (too many things in parallel).

The Seagate typical spec is 1.8w I believe.

Finishing the main site piece this morning. I did a few quick benches as well.

BTW - @Deslok these drives are so slow it really does not matter v. USB 3.0.

I can report that the slightly cheaper STEA4000400 (120USD on Newegg and Amazon, Newegg has also had 10USD off promocodes for it) also contains the ST400LM016. It doesn't come with the 200GB Onedrive plan, but I don't have a use for it. The enclosure has a sort of ugly pyramid pattern, so not wasn't too upset with wrecking it. As a bit of a warning, I'm not sure this one is open able without some visible damage to the enclosure, the top laps over the edge of the base.

I wonder if there are any 4 bay(or larger) nas units that are affordable these would work well in.

You mean 2.5" NAS ? Don't think so. The qnap and synology systems for 2.5" won't work.

I run WD 2tb in my synology that are 15mm height but in 3.5" drive bays.

Cool, quiet, low power. (But even my ds413 still uses more power than it should and could easily build lower power options... One day soon :) )

I saw those too but they were not same day/ one day shipping with Prime and did not have the OneDrive. The cases look similar save the design pattern.

Here is the crazy part:
4TB - $119.99 - http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STEA4000400/dp/B017KE8OG0/
3TB - $129.99 - Amazon.com: Seagate Expansion 3TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEA3000400): Computers & Accessories

That is really strange.

Packaging wise, the internals of the STEA4000400 are quite Spartan (literally just foil tape around the SATA <->USB3.0 bridge board and little rubber nubs around some Phillips screws in the drive. So the Backup Plus is likely to survive better if you keep it in the enclosure than the STEA4000400.

Price wise, it looks like the Backup Plus (STDR4000100) and the STEA4000400 have both been around or sub 100USD within the past month (and now I have a slickdeals alert setup for these). So there are definitely deals to be had here.

Wait sub 100 for 4tb drives? That's kinda absurd aren't 3.5" 4tb over 100 still?

Yeah it's a little crazy, I had missed the sub 100USD deals (happened back on 31/3/2016). Note that these are typically with promocodes so you may only be able to get 1 or 2 at that price. But if you are not in a hurry to amass a large number of drives, then there are deals to be had.
