Hi guys,

I have a DL380 G5 at home, with a P212 controller connected to an MSA60 via it's external port and 8088 cable. Everything with that works fine.

I'd like to replace the P212 with a 9260-8i I had in an old machine, as it a better controller. I have an SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cable connecting the 9260 to an adapter (8087 to 8088), and then connected it to the MSA60 using the 8088 cable.

Neither the enclosure, nor the disks in it show up in MSM. I tried a similar setup using the P212 controller instead (it has 1 internal port), but that didn't work either.

Has anyone ever tried this particular configuration with the 9260, as if others have got it working, I suspect I either had a faulty 8087-8088 adapter or 8087 cable.

Many thanks

you probably have a bad cable. there's no reason why this wouldn't work.
Thanks. Obviously HP say it will only work with an HP controller, but as far as I am aware, it is just a dumb JBOD expander! I have seen others using HBAs with it, but couldn't find anything with LSI RAID controllers.

Think I'll pick up a new cable and see what happens.

Ensure your SFF-8087 to SFF-8088 adapter isn't directional as well.

If that's what you meant by "new cable" then I agree with the path you're taking =)

I have two that came with the LSI controller when I bought it a couple of years ago, tried both, neither works.

They have a label on each end, one say CTRL and the other is EXPB. I assume this means controller and expander. Tried it both ways around and made no difference.

I am ordering this one: 0.8m Mini-SAS SFF-8087 to Mini-SAS Cable - LSI00249 - Scan.co.uk

List compatibility with my controller and am hoping the sideband will be an added benefit allowing the controller to monitor the status of the enclosure.

EDIT: sorry, I just realised you said the adapter, not the cable. This is the adapter I have: Lycom ST-187 Dual mini-SAS to SAS or SATA PCI Express 8 Port - Scan.co.uk

Can't find much documentation on it to confirm if it is directional, but I am using it the way round I would imagine it was designed for (internal to external)

Well I just tried connecting my P212 to the adapter using 8088, then used an 8087 to 4x sata breakout cable connected to a couple of drives, and that seems to work.

I guess either the 8087 cables I have are duff, or the adapter is directional :(

Dammit!

I struggled to find somewhere in the UK that carried this one! Do you have any advice on another on I could get that wouldn't be directional?

I can see some SFF 8087 to 8088 direct cables, but they are like £10 more than this adapter was!

Just throwing in my $0.02: I have an MSA60 plugged into my LSI 9206-16e (SAS2308). Everything works, including SES and dynamic fan control. I'm using a Molex 3m SFF-8644 to SFF-8088 cable (3m was cheapest when I was buying....).
