Intel RMS25KB080 same LSI9207-8i ? for $179

I just got a RMS25KB080 myself, but not recognized. I tried it in X79 ASUS Rampage IV Extreme, X58 ASUS P6T, and X58 Gigabyte G1.Guerrilla. None of them detected it. I used SAS2FLSH and Megarec from SAS2108 collection of files someone posted some time back (my understanding is that those should at least detect the controller). In windows device manager, I can only see it as an unknown device. Tried all various PCI-E slots, tried disabling various on-board storage controllers. Maybe the card simply has no hope of working with non-server motherboards?

It might be Intel server board locked, as it's classed and an integrated card.
Wonder how this would work though.

Some ASUS and Gigabyte boards have issues with LSI cards,mine did till I updated the BIOS (didn't see cards either)
Now can see LSI controllers but can't flash M1015.

I should get one to try in my ASRock p55 board which has been rock steady with LSI cards.

You should be using the SAS 2308 controller (see http://ark.intel.com/products/60288/Intel-Integrated-RAID-Module-RMS25KB080) BIOS for that one just in case.

Really frustrating that so many motherboards still do not work with RAID cards.

From what I understand, many vendors just test basic cards, NICs and GPUs in consumer/ gamer motherboards. With that being said, you would hope that compatibility would be better in 2012.

Yeah, i would like to use a 2308 set of files, but dont know where to get them. I searched all over the place, but could not find any. Intel's downloads section only has drivers and web management utility. But i would hope that even the older megarec/sas2flash would detect a 2308-based controller. The fact that i get no bios (nothing on Ctrl+C) and unknown device in windows suggests that tihs is a no-go.

Do you guys know, for HBA-type usage (I will only run RAID0, so no parity needed), would 2108 or 2208 based MegaRAID controllers work OK, or will they actually slow RAID0 down? Also, does 2208 support PCI-E 3 speeds? I have seen some statement that 2208 and 2308 both support gen3 (i know 2308 does), but from what I've seen, specs of 2208-based controllers only specify pci-e 2.0.

Hmm may I ask why you suggest that 2108 and 2208 would be better than 2308 for RAID0? I figured that those controllers with RoC's are sort-of useless for RAID0, since there are no parity calculations required in RAID0. In fact, I thought they might be worse than a 2308-based HBA because of on-board cache adding latency.

I am looking to RAID0 a bunch of SSDs with potential for expansion later (e.g., 8 SSDs in the future because I'm a geek like that), and with speeds starting to pass 500 MB/sec sequential, i would like to have PCIE 3.0 capability to avoid saturating the PCIE lanes (granted, it probably wouldn't saturate that often anyway, unless I am moving all teh pron, you know).

I think the ultimate speed is the SAS2308 in IT mode.
Then let the OS stripe the SSD's

The SAS2308 (IR mode) might get bogged down with 8x 500MB/s+ SSD's and sort RAID0 striping as well.

The SAS2208 (PCIe 3.0) with 8x SSD's in RAID0 will give great write performance (1Gb cache), read will be slightly behind the above.
Overall the better choice as you find that 8x SSD's in RAID0 = high chance of failure, and you may want to have RAID with redundancy.

As for detecting the controller.
The RMS25KB080 is new, no new FW out yet.

You've tried Megarec -adplist ?
Even broken/bad FW cards will show.
If Megarec can't see it then probably nothing will.

I may have to bite the bullet and get one to test on the ASRock.

Yes, I tried megarec in addition to sas2flash. Nothing got detected. For detecting the controller, I don't think it would matter whether any drives are conected to it, correct? In any case, I will try with drives connected a couple more times before giving up. After that, I will be returning this card (or if you or someone wants to try it out, I could ship to you instead, for $165 - i have to pay for shipping on the return anyhow).

Btw was there is sticker on ESD bag on yours aswell, saying " this raid controller is designed for use in Xeon E-series servers,
the controller will not work on non intel serverboards or desktop boards"?

Keep us posted. I would think Intel E-series is something like Intel Xeon E3 or Xeon E5 but I may be incorrect.

So it says: "Notice : This product is designed for use with Intel serverboards and systems that are compatible with

This time i belive they are right, returning the new raidcontroller tomorrow, and get it exchanged for a LSI 9207-8i
card, had hoped this would have been cheap way to get a lsisas2308 based card. Gues im still stuck on ICH10R or
the old adaptec 2805 card i have atm...

My best advice to any of you, if you dont have a intel server board in your system, then dont bother about this card,
too sad. Intel usualy makes decent products...
