Any advantage going to WD RE4 4TB from HGST 4TB 7200 RPM NAS?

Personally, I like to use different hardware now.

Your not comparing like product lines. WD RE4 is a Enterprise Grade Drive where the Hitachi NAS drive is designed for smaller scale environments (less drives per system). I would expect the RE4 to be more expensive.

WD Red Pro (7200rpm) vs. HGST 7200rpm NAS would be a fair comparison.

Agreed with Patrick that diversification can be wise and in this case it does not really increase the complexity to support.

Mind you that I have over 400x 6TB NAS drives in a lustre configuration and it works great :). It's a good drive, nice alternative for home use.

We do 36 bay chassis, all drives off of one controller. Each chassis contains 3x OSTs of 11 drives each, RAID6 with 1GHS per pack. I think we have about 14 chassis in our setup. We have 4 more getting fired up with ZFS backed to test next. It allows us to get away from battery replacements every couple of years.
