First post so hi everyone. I've been a long time lurker.

So this whole talk of open source and colo has got me very excited. I went and got a 1/4 cab and a /27

I'm trying to configure my pfsense box right now but the ISP just sent me the information.

Network: xx.zz.yyy.0
Broadcast: xx.zz.yyy.31
Netmask: 255.255.255.224
Gateway: xx.zz.yyy.1

That should give me a usable range of .2 to .30 right?

My next question is how do I configure pfsense to work with this? Do I just set this up like I would a home router or do I need to do something else?

Regarding your first question: Yes you are right, is a /27 subnet so you have 29 usable ips
I'm not a pfsense expert but in all firewall you have to set two nics one for your wan (uplink to your provider) and the other for your internal lan (your switch)
You can also set pfsense in transparent mode

Sorry to post a noobie question. So if I need 48 usable IPs, my broadcast should look like xx.zz.yyy.50?

you can do 1:1 nat if you wanted to give some hosts/interfaces external ips behind the pfsense box and then others can just have private ips/regular nat
