DataON DNS-2760 W/ 2x 12GBs SAS Controllers Model G460-J-12

DataOn rebrands a HGST 4u60G2 as a DataOn DNS-2760.

I was able to purchase one of these for $323 plus tax with free shipping, however the seller changed the shipping method to freight after shipping mine.
Mine arrived today, however I have not yet verified which firmware versions these are shipping with and whether they are vendor locked to certain HDD models like some firmware versions of the 4U60G2.

The next cheapest 4U60G2 I can find is $1100 shipped with no caddies.

[EDIT] opened mine to find it does in fact have all 60 caddies included.

It says no drives/rails, but sleds aren't mentioned one way or the other. They're in the picture, but that doesn't always mean anything.

Also, I can't figure out how to get a freight quote out of them before deciding to buy. They're apparently not taking messages right now.

I will take pictures of mine when I get off work today to verify caddies, I only opened the first box of 2 that had the power supplies and controllers in them.

Originally they only had one photo of the power supply label posted until I messaged them and asked for more photos.

I can see the "need" to have one of these - but what kind of homelab has a need to put 60xspinners to any kind of use? Unless you want to download all porn on the internet - which is a goal I can relate to :p
what if the day of tomorrow inet dies and you cannot check youporn, xtube etc anymore? there is never enough porn in your drives.

(have like 70TB of work related stuff in my drives, and need more space. Also like 50 4TB unused spinners )

I currently have a Newisys-NDS-4600 which DataOn Rebranded as a DNS-1660, flashed with DataOn firmware, because mine came with an old firmware revision. It came with 60 2TB SAS3 drives. It currently has 8x6TB Reds, 5x3TB WD Reds, and 45 2TB Hitachi SAS3 drives. This will replace it.

I'm always looking at 12G enclosures, but never found a deal before now. Since I knew DataOn and Data Direct Networks rebrands other OEs equipment, I started looking and found this. I Couldn't not buy it. It helps that I do not have to pay to power any of my equipment.

Er, I'm not looking for my *first* 4U60 for home.

Admittedly, I'm mostly looking for a spare at this point, because I expect *something* to die in the next few years, and ordering a substitute on short notice isn't cheap.

Nope. Or least the 4U60 isn't. It has redundant SAS expanders. If you use SAS disks, then they show up on both controllers and you can use multipath to get redundancy. If you use SATA disks, then they only appear on the first controller because they don't have the hardware to talk to the second controller.

Even with SATA disks, you can connect the 4U60's first controller to the host with 2 cables (using both the IN and OUT ports) and get 2 * 4*12 = 96 Gbps of SAS throughput, or about 200 MB/sec each to all 60 drives at once. Presumably you could fill this with 12Gbps SAS SSDs and use both ports on both controllers to get 192 Gbps, or ~24 GB/sec of throughput. Or just buy 4x PCIe 4 NVMe drives and save a few grand on your power bill.

If anyone is wondering how that "two cables, twice the throughput" thing works, see SAS architecture for a quick overview. Individual 12 Gbps SAS links are "SAS PHYs". The logical connection between two SAS devices is a "SAS Port". When SAS detects multiple SAS PHYs between a pair of devices, then it adds them all to the same SAS Port and spreads traffic over them. So, with 1 cable you have 4 PHYs in the port; with 2 cables you get 8 PHYs in the port. It's a simple, normal part of SAS.

Opened the package when I got home and it has all 60 Drive caddies, numbered and in order!

Does anyone know the part number for the rails?

They list the same product on their website for $399.98. The site calculated $100 shipping for me.
There's a phone number on the site too...tempting to call them up and strike up a deal since no ebay fees and they could just place the order over the phone. Looks like they're a true brick and mortar store too in Missouri, which means anyone local can really get a deal with a local pickup. They also repair cell phones and do 3D printing--sounds like someone we should all get to know. ;)
