I need to upgrade my Synology storage and I'm having a hard time narrowing down what hard drives to get. I want to wait till 20TB drives come out but with the chip shortages it might be awhile. Any guidance on getting new drives for my 5 bay Synology?

I'm trying to stay below $400 per drive.

Horrible timing, sorry to say.

If you can wait, wait a few months, prices just have exploded.

New? Used?

I like the seagate exos x16/x18 sata drives: great quality, firmware downloads available (and cheapish before the chia boom)

I am quite happy with mine too, and (opposed to many ppl telling me otherwise) I am quite happy with the support too.

I'd recommend the exos x14 over x16, the x14 has better reliability. Price wise, usually the x16 16tb is better. Personally, I stick with WD drives and would go with the new HC550 16tb or 18tb, both of those have more cache and work great.
