I have a supermicro 256mb raid controller now that i've flashed into an adapter 5805 raid controller with 8 ports. I've seen the areca 1280ML cards pretty cheap on ebay, is it worth upgrading to the areca? it seems like it's an older card, but I can't tell if it supports 3tb+ driver or has drivers for server 2012r2.

they were just LSI cards with a single fan on them , not terribly great design and non-LSI Compatible RIS so you won't be lucky in a pinch when you need to replace the controller!

I've had miserable experiences with the Areca cards. They were finicky about which drives they would work with and failed drive recovery resulted in lost arrays more often than not. Worse, Areca's don't do elevator seeking on raid 1 or raid 10. I avoid Areca like the plague.

I was sort of looking at the areca 1880ix now. I like the pricepoint and that it has 16 sata ports. I can't find an lsi in the $500 range with that many ports.
