I'm planning the software side of my first server (Cisco UCS C460 M2, 4 @ 10 core Xeon, 128 GB RAM). What are the benefits of ESXi over bare metal OmniOS?

Use case is computational chemistry compute node, backup file storage for other computers, home lab / HPC learning (though careerwise the chemistry side is more important than sys admin).

If this is a pure filer (FC/iSCSI, NFS, SMB or S3) baremetal is best.
If you want to run other services and operating systems use ESXi as base.

I plan to primarily run calculations, maybe a web server as an excuse to learn zones. My goal is to build native. If that doesn't work try lx zone and only if I strike out there do a Linux VM with bhyve or kvm.

No plans for Windows. Unless I somehow can magically afford a FirePro S7150 I might not even have X.

Is ESXi the only way to overcome the specificity of 10GB drivers in OMNIOS? All my 10GB cards are either Mellanox or Chelsio
