In light of Intel including ECC RDIMM support with the W-2200 series, 4 channel @ 2933 MHz, any idea as to how the similarly priced Intel Xeon W-2255 stacks up against the AMD Epyc 7302P for workstation use, such as photo/video editing in the $800-$850 price range?

$798 Intel W-2255 (3.7 / 4.5GHz) (4.7GHz 4-core TB3) (10C/20T) (19.25MB) (165W) (FCLGA2066)
$825 Epyc 7302P (3.0 / 3.3GHz) (16C/32T) (128MB) (155/180W) (SP3)

Regarding motherboards, it looks like the Supermicro X11SRL-F might be a viable option if Supermicro updates the bios, similar to what they are planning to do with the X11SPA series.

Looking at the mess that is the upgrade path from Naples to Rome (or lack thereof), I would not count on the second part of your statement.

Teething issues are part of every new platform, it's a catch-22 at this point I guess: a broken as **** platform or Swiss Cheese CPUs.

I’m still waiting on some viable Epyc 7002 motherboard options that contain PCI-E 4.0. At this point, with Epyc 7003 launch in Q3 2020, I’m wondering if I should just scrap the whole Epyc 7002 build plan and pick up a nice 14 core E5-2600 v3 to hold me over for a year or two?

Supermicro now lists the X11SRL-F as supporting the new Xeon W-2200 with the higher TDP starting with Bios v2.0 and a VRM update performed by Supermicro. I assume we will shortly see a Rev. 2 of this board. Interestingly, it’s nearly the middle of January and Intel W-2200 CPU’s are still showing backordered/out of stock everywhere. The W-2245/W-2255 seems to be a nice sweet spot in the lineup for what I’m looking for in a workstation.

Just be curious, what does "VRM update" mean? And how to update? By a bios updating, or by replacing the physical VRM module?

My interpretation was the VRM’s need to be physically swapped out on the board by Supermicro, along with a bios update. I’m not sure how practical that is on a $350 motherboard. I assume any W-2200 that is higher than 145w TDP would require the new board revision with the more powerful VRM’s.

This sounds a little crazy, and may not be practical... Probably a new board revision is a better solution.

Actually I doubt if it's necessary to physically replace the VRM module only when the TDP increases from 140w to 165w, since Supermicro usually use much powerful VRM components on their boards beforehand.

I’m not sure why they would mention the VRM’s if it was something that could be revised/updated via a bios update. We shall see! I might reach out to Supermicro if I decide to go with a W-2200 for this build. Still on the fence between the W-2200 and a Epyc 7302P.

FYI, now I have two platforms on my desktop:
1. Supermicro H11SSL-i Rev 2.0 + Epyc 7502P + Micron DDR4 3200AA RDIMM 16GB *8
2. Supermicro X11SRM-F + Xeon W-2150B + Micron DDR4 2666V RDIMM 8GB *4

Both look charming :D
