Just received my ES E5-2630 V4 from China (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2630-V4-ES-QK3G-2-2Ghz-25MB-L3-10Core-Max-Turbo-85W-14nm-CPU/323878498966?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649) And stuck it in to see if it would work. I only ordered one just in case it didn't, so I wouldn't be out an extra 100$. To my surprise, it appears fully supported. I have HT disabled, but it booted up into Ubuntu showing 10 cores available.

So while YMMV, it looks like Quanta servers work with ES sample processors. I didn't need to the E5-2630V4 for this, since I need 2 processors to use my add-on GPU, so I've ordered 2x E5-2623 V4's instead, and will hang on to this to use for a new K8s cluster build. Enjoy!

If yours happen to come with 500W PSU's, I'd be happy to trade you my 750's. I don't need 750w, I try to optimize my power supplies to get closer to my actual usage to slightly increase efficiency... I'm using at most maybe 100-120W (single 8c 85w processor + 2 sticks of ram and 4 ssds). I know it's a marginal increase, but i pay a lot for electricity, so every few watts i save helps :)
Anyone know the model # on the 500w psus? Also, do they make an 80+ platinum psu for these? The 750s appear to be 80+ gold.

They have a few 500W Platinum compatible PSUs listed on their website.

Did you look at the FRU document? I found one doc but it only listed the Quanta part numbers which turned up no matches in google. that ebay link looks promising, but @59$ each, it doesn't really make sense. I'm only drawing 100W, so 100W out of a 750W PSU is <20% utilization which puts me down a few % on efficiency. If I could get the 500W ones that'd raise me up a bit, but not at the nearly the cost of the chassis. That's why I was hoping someone had received 500W PSU's and wanted to trade :D

I got them from a compatible components list on their website: Marketing summary report

I did some more searching and found that the DPS-500AB-2 A supply is also used in some HP servers under the 633680-101 labeling. The HP version is only rated for 200-277V input and has a weird power plug, so not very useful (I see some on eBay for $10 + shipping).

Yeah, I'm thinking the gold rated PSUs are good enough, given the cost of replacing them. If they were worse than gold rated maybe I could see replacing the PSUs.

I had no idea. In fact, I thought I was going to get a janky one, because the one in the photos had weird looking rack ears...but the one I received had normal ears, and all these goodies :D Literally all I needed was CPU/Memory and caddies

Edit: This is the one I purchased, they have more: QuantaGrid Server D51B-1U 10SFF BAREBONE 2x HEATSINK 2x PSU RAIL | eBay

Edit2: The description says i350 and 3Gbps sata controller, so either their description is wrong, or they have various models and I won the lottery :D
Seller said he had 200 of them, so that's how many I bought.

A cool fact about these, if you add them into librenms, along with ipmi info, librenms will graph the power consumption from the PSUs for you...my supermicros don't do that :(

Oh nice. Power consumption seemed ok when I checked it.

200 seems like much too round of a number, so I assume a handful more will show back up on ebay after my order gets processed.

Does anyone find them a little noisy? In the same environment, my Intel 1U servers are a whisper compared to the Quanta.
My fans never go below 7000 rpm at idle and there aren't any options in the BIOS to adjust thermal/fan settings.

I started with high clock rate 16c cpu , then 12c cpu.
I ended up with dual E5-4610v3 ( low power 10c cpu ) to keep the fan spinning between 4k -5k rpm.
Now it is usable in my spare room.

They're pretty noisy yeah. My fans stay around 8k. You can put a E5-4000 series in these? I thought those required 4 processors...you can run dual? I guess it makes sense, since you can put a single E5-2600 v3/v4 in there, and they're dual. Just always assumed the 4 socket was the minimum for the 4000 series.

Picked up 12 x E5-4667 v3 retail ( 16 core , 32T, base 2.0ghz , turbo 2.9ghz ) CPU at $80 each.

The CPU came up from HP servers pull, looks like brand new without any thermal paste on top.

Single E5-4667 v3 Cinebench R165 is 2200

I been using E5-4xxx v3 series for a while at least 2-3 years , either is single or dual socket board.

I have not encounter any issue, my guess E5-4xxx cpu used 1-2 watts more due to extra QPI link circuitry

All-cores-turbo seems to be substantially lower on 46xx vs equivalent 26xx cpus:

Say, E5-2695v3 and E5-2699v3 have an all cores turbo of 2.8ghz, vs only 2.4ghz on the equivalent E5-4660v3 and E5-4669v3 processors.

46xx sometimes also have lower TDP and higher maximum operating temperatures -- no surprise given the lower clock speed.

Price vs performance is on the side of E5-4xxx v3

That is why, I been buying un-loved E5-4xxx v3 chip for a while now.

That is why, I been buying un-loved E5-4xxx v3 chip for a while now.
At $80 it sure is hard to argue.

What I saw most recently, was more like, $350 for E5-4669v3 vs $600 or thereabouts for E5-2699v3, which is a decent reduction based on both being 18 cores.

However, with the lower clock speed, it's more fair to compare the 18 core E5-4669v3 @ $350 against a 16 core E5-2698v3 (which you said was $400) or a 14 core E5-2695v3 (typically under $300)

Certainly if you can find deals on 14 core or higher 46xx chips for under $150, it becomes pretty compelling. It sounds like they happen here and there; I didn't see any when I looked.

For me unfortunately, I need to standardize on as few CPU models as possible to make things easier for my customers who expect to be able to buy the same thing from us over an extended period of time. As well as, marketing and sales is harder when you're offering a lot of similar-but-not-identical products.

So for me, the hit or miss nature of the low prices, combined with the lower clock speeds, doesn't make it an opportunity I can take advantage of.

For personal use, waiting around for a good deal on these does sound like a good way to get a great value. Thanks for the info : )
