Thought I'd better share this, after suffering 2 failed drives due to a firmware bug; lucky for Intel's worldwide warranty.

If you have these drives, recommend updating to MR1 firmware asap.

Errors with Intel® Solid State Drive DC S4510 and S4610 Series

What are you seeing?
The drive is showing a screen error "Critical State", or other issues.

Environment:
Channel hang applies to only the below products:
  • Intel® SSD D3-S4510 Series 3.84TB, 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC
  • Intel® SSD D3-S4510 Series 1.92TB, 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC
  • Intel® SSD D3-S4610 Series 3.84TB, 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC
  • Intel® SSD D3-S4610 Series 1.92TB, 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC
Customers of S4510 M.2 form factors still on older firmware could see intermittent drive drop during initial boot. This issue applies only to M.2 form factors as below:
  • Intel® SSD D3-S4510 Series 240GB, M.2 80mm, SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC
  • Intel® SSD D3-S4510 Series 480GB, M.2 80mm, SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC
  • Intel® SSD D3-S4510 Series 960GB, M.2 80mm, SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC

How to fix it:
With previous firmware, there is a bug called channel hang on Intel® SSDs SSD D3-S4510 and SSD D3-S4610 with capacities of 3.84TB and 1.92TB.

Also S4510 M.2 form factors still on older firmware could see intermittent drive drop during initial boot.

These issues have been resolved with the latest firmware update (MR1 firmware with specific firmware versions as mentioned in the table below).

Here is the information on how to do a firmware update on an SSD: How to Update Firmware of an Intel Data Center (DC) Class Solid State Drive.

For simple examples to update the firmware (and also extract SMART Attributes and other information from Intel® Data Center SSDs), please refer to: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000055357/memory-and-storage.html

For any further question you can contact the Intel technical support.

Cause & More Information:
The following information can be found on the release notes of the Intel® SSD Data Center Tool (Intel® SSD DCT):

Welcome!

I started get read and checksum errors on my storage pool; scrub would always be repairing data each time, then Solaris would hang and have to be reset before one of the drives went into disabled logical state. Data was corrupted on the 2nd drive, but was able to salvage the latest changes (in between hangs lol). I also had End to End Error Counts which were failing SMART status too.

The tech support from Intel was awesome, drives were sent and received by air express and had the drives replaced within a week.

Thanks for this! thinking of getting the 7.68 tb version. It doesn't seem to be affected by this bug?
