hello

I have a bunch of components on hand and got a couple Rosewill chassis for free and am trying to figure out what I need/should get to complete this. Will be running Unraid, primarily Plex with hardware transcoding but potentially a couple VMs.

Since I got 2 of the chassis for a beginner build I want to build and fill one and add the 2nd one later as DAS to have a full 30 drive Unraid. I'm trying to make sure however the first one comes together I can easily add the 2nd when I have the drives to fill it.

Here is what I have on hand:
2 Rosewill L4500s
Asrock x399 Taichi motherboard
1950x thread ripper cpu
64TB ddr4 ram
P2000 gpu
LSI SAS 9207-8i
HP 24 Bay SAS PCI-E Expander Card
15 WD hard drives, mix of retail reds and shuckables

Still trying to decide which fans to swap out in the Rosewill. This will live in my living room so going for as close to silent as possible.

I still need a CPU cooler, fans, cables, not sure if i should get a fan controller.

My big question is will this LSI card and SAS expander work for what I want to do. These are what I have on hand but I want to make sure that if I expand to 30 drives with a 2nd chassis that this will be doable with the hardware I have. If I need different cards I have to budget to swap these.

The Taichi only has 4 pci lanes so trying to make sure I have room for expansion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first build outside of just a self contained tower so i've never dealt with HBAs and SAS expanders.

I built a dual xeon E5-2650 v2 system as a home server a few years ago in this case!

This is mostly what I used. WAY quieter than the super loud stock fans. I keep it on 24/7 since it runs ESXi with Unraid(w/plex) and pfSense. It sits right next to my wife and I's desk in our office with no huge noise problems. About as loud as a standard pc with air cooling instead of a server taking off.

6x Cheap, quiet 120m fans for the main case fans(Noctua PWM would be better but nearly double the price for the NF A12x25):

2x noctua 80m fans for rear exhaust:

3-pin fan hub (I keep set to low and used a sata powered version not this exact one)

or
PWM fan hub (just one I found on amazon, if you decide to go with PWM 4-pin fans instead):

For the LSI card I used this one for the internal drives:
LSI SAS9201-16I 6Gbps SAS/SATA PCI-Express 2.0 x8 Host Bus Adapter Card | eBay

There is also the "E" version of this card (which is like 1/4 the cost too) which means if you add a second chassis with more drives you could add an additional 16. (Just make sure to flash into IT mode)
