Hi all,
I have a Supermicro X11SSi-LN4F motherboard that's running great as a FreeNAS server, including plex and zoneminder in jails. I'm considering a CPU upgrade from Skylake e3 to a Kaby Lake e3-1245 version to get HW decoding and transcoding for Zoneminder and Plex.
I've found a couple of threads with wildly different advice on this - some saying it should be possible, but others saying not.
For example:
https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...anscoding-freenas-machine-itx-ipmi-ecc.21342/
https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...-motherboard-with-transcoding-and-ipmi.15302/

Although my motherboard has video wired through IPMI, the manual says that additional video bios options are available when you plug in an iGPU chip. This suggests that it might work, but I'd like more confirmation before I drop $300 on a new CPU.

Can anyone confirm that they have working iGPU transcoding with an IPMI-enabled motherboard? If so, what motherboard are you using?
Thanks!

Freenas jails don't support Intel Quicksync
Feature #33399: Quicksync/nvenc - FreeNAS - iXsystems & FreeNAS Redmine. Running Docker on Linux host is possibly to use quicksync (ie :iGPU hardware encoding).
I got sick and tired of freenas jail complete lack of updating. My advice - keep Freenas service files. Use another host for plex as docker container(s)
Thank you for the advice.
Further down that feature request, it looks like most of the glue is present to allow quicksync. The only thing I'm not completely sure about is the kernel drivers for the newer i915. Those do appear to be available for FreeBSD 11.2.

In my copious spare time, I'll try to install a test instance of freenas on my older haswell machine and see if I can get it to run.
