Low power 10Gbit SSD NAS + VM Host - Ryzen 3000 or Intel?

I need a 24/7 power efficient nas/vm host to to run lightweight VM's for homelab tinkering as well as backup server software etc. Host will be proxmox, guests will be a mix of linux and windows, ZFS will be the filesystem on the proxmox host.

I like the look of the u-nas 810a case and am leaning towards that with a micro atx motherboard. 10G lan is a requirement as i'll be filling the case with SSD's (either onboard or add-in card is fine). I see that ASRock Rack has AM4 motherboards out that will support ryzen 3000 upon its release while also offering ipmi support: https://www.servethehome.com/asrock-rack-x470d4u-amd-ryzen-server-motherboards/

The biggest question I have is which cpu/motherboard combination (with IPMI) makes the most sense for my use case? I'd like somewhere between 4-8 cores, with boost clocks as high as possible when needed but excellent idle power consumption as the system will be idle the majority of the time. ECC support is nice, I may or may not bother with it depending on cost. The Ryzen 7 3700x is looking very compelling with one of the asrock boards linked above. Can anyone tell me if there is a better choice to be made?

IMHO the best bang for buck, low power, low idle, and can hit good performance on single core is an Intel XEON E3 v3. If you need more than 32GB RAM then the newer generation can handle more. Supermicro motherboard, Intel 10Gig PCIE Card, E3-1270 V3, 32GB ECC RAM, IPMI, 8x SSD (S3500 well say) you're sitting on a very affordable high performance low power system :)

Xeon D-1500, he Supermicro x10sdv boards.
(Lower power than the d-2100), inbuilt 10G options, from 2-16 cores, up to 128gb memory is easy and cheapish (4 x 32g), low power and mini-itx.

It’s clocks are not that high that’s a downside for sure, that’s where @T_Minus has really given the best option if high clocks are important and low power.

bleomycin, I have exactly the same requirements, currently being still on an X9SCM-F with E3-1230v2. I have a strong tendency towards an X470D4U with one of the upcoming Ryzen 3000, paired with a Mellanox ConnectX-3 dual port. At least in Europe, this would be actually cheaper than a new Supermicro X10/X11 solution, even despite the cheaper RDIMMs for Xeon D.

I will probably combine it with Intel S4510 and some WD Reds.

If it helps at all I'll be building a system similar to your requirements based around the X470-D4U and a Ryzen 3700X as and when they become available (hopefully within a few weeks), assuming the new chips are at least as good as the 2700X.

The power usage at idle on my AMD 2400G is very low so I'm hoping I can drop the idle usage of my NAS (a 4P haswell xeon) as well as giving me extra horsepower for video encoding.

I have 4 systems running X470D4U right here, so ask me anything you want about this setup. Power consumption with a Mellanox ConnectX-2, 64Gb non-ECC ram, 1Tb nvme and 500Gb SATA m.2 as well as a Ryzen 1600X is 35W idle, 95W fully loaded (disk IO + network IO + 100% CPU).

@DavidB, do you see differences with SATA performance between the 6 ports from X470 and the 2 from ASM1061 (SATA3_0 and SATA3_1)? In combination with M.2, those 8 SATA ports would be nice for a small file server, without needing a dedicated HBA.

And being only familiar with Supermicro IPMI so far, what do you think of Asrock IPMI and BIOS?

I have not tested this difference as I don't have 8 drives, will run a quick performance test tomorrow.

The AsRock IPMI is fantastic, very responsive and good tooling around remote media etc. Their BIOS is a bit of a mess, clearly not entirely finished as a ton of items miss labeling and help text. Their BIOS updates are to be seen with caution, I installed the 3.04 BIOS for a test (obviously don't have a Ryzen 3x so don't need it) and basically nothing worked anymore. USB ports would freeze, SATA/NVME devices disappeared while booting etc.

@tkr tested performance via both controllers using a standard fio SSD test with a Samsung Evo 860
TLDR: the ASMedia controller is roughly 40% slower than the onboard SATA, still within reason for HDDs but clearly limiting for SSD

Yea seems to be typical for all mainstream type chipsets, see the same on intel boards when there are more than 6SATA onboard connections.
