Heh, I actually came here because I found this myself on ebay and was going to post it here with "do you think this is legit?", because it is a good price. I am interested because it would use less space than having to use an expander.

I sent a message to the seller asking if they had any problem with non-genuine cards, not sure what kind of an answer I will get.

I got 2 of these (running in my freenas system for 2 days now)- These seem legit - Only red flag was the shipping label had the return address cut out..

I am in need of upgrading the HBAs in my unRAID box. I''m quite interested in the 9400-16i, but I am a bit torn. I currently run two 8i controllers. Would I see a dip in performance by going down to one HBA from two? I wouldn't mind freeing up a slot to add a PCIe NVME card.

I currently am only using 6Gb/s SATA drives, but I will be switching those out with 12Gb/s SAS later this year.

Mind telling us your complete build?
I'm tempted but i'm not sure if it would work on non-server boards

I'm still working it out - so still not complete.. I like to tinker a bit to much.

FWIW - I believe you need a special "enabler" card thats support SFF-9402 standard - I believe the part number is: 05-50061-00

1m 2 SFF-8643 to 2 SFF-8643 NVMe Cable - 05-50061-00

Ordered a pair to test/confirm.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

ALSO - Quick reference to upgrade firmware/bios for these 9400-16i HBA's in freenas:

Locate 9400_16i_Pkg_P11_SAS_SATA_NVMe_FW_BIOS_UEFI from link below

HBA 9400-16i Tri-Mode Storage Adapter

In the zip there will be a few files - in the firmware folder you will have the SAS/SATA or mixed firmware
I downloaded HBA_9400-16i_Mixed_Profile.bin & mpt35sas_legacy.rom and used WINSCP to copy to root of server.

C0 or C1 depending on controller number -
storcli show all (shows controllers)
storcli /c0 show (shows info on 1st controler)

Ran to upgrade firmware
storcli /c0 download file=/HBA_9400-16i_Mixed_Profile.bin

Ran to upgrade bios
storcli /c0 download bios file = mpt35sas_legacy.rom

Much easier than previous LSI cards.

Well, I ended up buying one of these 9400-16i's. They dropped the price to $275. I offered $250 and they countered $260.

Now I need to buy some cables and then I will see if it works in unRAID.

Edit: Whoops! Looks like I wasnt paying attention. They were $250 the first go around.

Purchased two, flashed with no issues.
Oh hey, could you help point me in the right direction on the firmware? It looks like there is different firmware, SAS-only vs. mixed-mode, not sure which one to use. Also looks like is firmware, bios, and possibly another thing to flash? Did you use a program in Windows or did you use some flash boot media?

I would really appreciate the help.

Thank you

I used the mixed profile based on CaptainPoundSand's (THANKS CAP'N) post above and flashed the bios too. Used the windows version of storcli64 under windows 10. To make it easier with the directories and long filenames, I just created a C:\drivers\broadcom directory copied storcli64 and the firmware and bios files into it, then followed the Captain's directions above to flash both my cards. Be sure to open the command prompt as admin.

OK, I will give it a try. Thanks.

Hello CaptainPoundSand, did you choose the mixed profile because you are actually mixing drive types? I am only doing SATA disks and SSDs, I might do NVMe in the future, but I am wondering if it doesn't hurt anything to be in mixed regardless, or if there is an advantage to doing SATA-only if that is all you are doing.

Thanks

I did use mixed profile for SAS/NVME not the SATA (as I'm not running ata SATA). Fairly sure you'd have to run mixed if you wanted to do NVME/SATA - but I don't have any first hand on that. I'm still waiting for my LSI NVME cables to even see if mixed mode works. For now my 4x NVME are running on SM nvme pcie cards.

The 9400-16i works in unraid as well. Now I need to order some new cables so I can swap it into my main unraid box.
