Part of me thinks that these aren't good because they'd have high power consumption of a 4S. There's 2 available. If they can take V3 22nm CPUs and they've got big DDR3 risers, then this might be a way to get a high memory node and have a lot of PCIe too.

To me it looks like there's a bunch of these on the market. This one has drive trays, 4x CPUs, ram, and the SAS controller. It's an extra $150-250 for all that.

Two big nodes with cheap DDR3. If you think of them as two 2S each then it's like $675 per node configured.

$1,649.00 does not look too good of a price. and 4U servers can have extra colocation costs.

DDR3 have reasonable prices(gap to DDR4 is closing this year), but the bandwith/latency/volateges-thermals are worse than DDR4.

Cheapest DL580 Gen9 is over $3k for barebones HP ProLiant DL580 Gen9 CTO 4U Rack Mount Server with 3 year HPE Warrranty | eBay

Cheapest DL580 Gen8 barebones is $1450 obo right now HP Proliant DL580 G8 Gen8 Server Chassis 728551-B21 Barebone 46655479792 | eBay

The SM one has 4 CPUs, SAS controller, drive trays and RAM for $200 more.

Buying a complete bootable system on ebay makes it easier to go back and say the system isn't working since they'll test it before going out.

There was a $999 listing. I bought one. Dell PowerEdge M1000e Blade Chassis 9x Fan 6x 2360W PSU 2x CMC 1x iKVM No Rails 50742431211 | eBay

Later changed it to an auction and sold for $1036. Dell PowerEdge M640 0x0 includes 2 heatsinks H330 and Idrac 9 express 636946493035 | eBay

I believe seller has more of them.

For CPUs QK5B which is 0.1Ghz less clock than the E7-8890v4 sells for $300/ea. It works perfectly.

Of course there are some risks but heck, if you’re buying a 4 socker server I’d say just use extra $1000 and go with QK5B + DL580 G9.

TBH E7 v2 low clock low core count CPUs are not really charming at that price point. I suspect raw performance of four of them will be worse than two E5-2678 v3 which are like 160$/ea.
