I don't think there are may out there as folks went to 100Gb+ vs many 40Gb ports, so I wouldn't expect a super high volume -> not inexpensive.

It would need to have a PCIe switch + 2 of the XL710's on there, each only supports 2x 40G ports by itself, or only run on a x16 port that can bifurcate into 2x8 with a x8 port for each of the xl710's. That detail should be easy to find on there but I don't see it so you would want to inquire before attempting to order.

Intel® Ethernet Controller XL710-BM2 Product Specifications and https://www.intel.com/content/dam/w...t-briefs/xl710-10-40-gbe-controller-brief.pdf

Assuming it does, other than probably running very warm it should act similar to just having 2 dual port 40G cards with a minor performance hit due to the switch, or limitation in compatible motherboards without the switch.

My understanding is that for dual CPU servers, many of the high end implementations use two separate 2 port cards - one for each CPU. This eliminates most NUMA latency issues.

Besides, there's not much point in a 4 port 40Gb card on a single pcie gen 3 x16 slot (x16 x 8Gb per lane = 128Gb max throughput).

There would be for me as I'd want it so I didn't have to do a switch - 1 40g connection to 3 different PCs- direct connect from my main PC. I only typically have 1 active at a time.

Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion but I really really don't want a switch. Unless someone makes an 8 port fanless 40g or 100g switch that doesn't overheat.

I got a couple of 40G xl710 dual ports hooked up with a dac. The cards were $185 each used and the dac was $60 new. I got a price on the PE31640G4QI71 quad port new and it was about $1800. Hopefully someone will eventually be selling one on ebay.

That silicom card is actually a pair of xl710's on the same board with a pcie switch(it's a trick they've done before several times)
