Surely, i cant just plug this cable into our mini-SAS JBOD box and plug the other end into our QSFP+ port on the ethernet switch. So what is the use case for this adapter?

I bought a Netapp DS4243 24 bay enclosure for $50.
To connect it to my LSI HBA I need an adapter cable (SFF 8088 to QSFP).
Netapp used the QSFP connector for their SAS devices (in the past).

QSFP cables can carry many things (SAS, ethernet, etc)... but it's not convert-able (if you know what I mean). I haven't seen external SAS switches, but expanders do something similar, so who knows.
