I'm having trouble getting my LSI SAS9200-8e controller to detect more than 2 out of my 8 drives (all 8 drives are identical) as you can see from the pics. I have my card connected to a dual SFF-8088 to dual SFF-8087 card. Then each internal SFF-8087 slot has a mini-SAS to 4 SATA cable connected to 4 drives.

@BoredSysadmin how do you have your's connected and working?

Cable length issue? Do you have a shorter breakout cable that you can hang 4 disks from as a test?
About the only other time I have seen this was when the card was flashed with firmware that got confuddled with the SBR that was on the card :)

I've connected from a pair of 8088 10ft cables from SAS9200-8e to 8088 ports A on primary and secondary controllers on the Xyratec.
The only time I had issue detecting drive is then the drives weren't seated properly all the way to connect to the backplate. It'd sound a bit silly but please double check the wiring and connections

Unless you know for a fact that the card is fully functional, check for blown/sheared-off connector coupling capacitors on the backside of the card, directly under the external connectors. They are situated in two groups in a straight line, each group consists of eight caps (one pair per channel).
I have seen this on two LSI9211-8i cards, with one and two channels not working respectively.
See "https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/need-help-repairing-lsi-9201-16i-card.15300/" by BLinux where you will find illustrative pictures and excellent information supplied by Sullivan.

Do you have an expander you can hook up as a test? That will show the number of lanes connected. I have a 9285-8e where one connector only has 3 lanes functional.

Thanks for all your responses.

It turned out I had updated to only the second latest (20.00.06.00) firmware. I just updated to 200.00.07.00 as well as the latest BIOS and all drives are now detected. Phew!
Congrats, but same HBA worked just fine with the original f/w it came with. If it ain't broke - don't fix it :)
