This motherboard will NOT play nice with Fedora 29. See attached pic for where the install gets stuck.

Even tried 28, 27, 26 & Ubuntu 18.10...same issue.

If the o/s kernel is 4.x, the install will fail, if the kernel is 3.x, the install will work (Centos 7.6, RHEL 7.6 both install fine)

SuperMicro is "advising" the use of Fedora 23-25 or Ubuntu 18.04

Anyone know how to "solve" this issue?

My first guess would be graphics related maybe something to do with the Server Board IPMI/Graphics not playing nice, do you have any PCIe vid cards to test with?

Yes, I do have PCIe video cards that I can try.
Let's say that "fixes" the problem...what's next?

I have a similar X10SDV-4C+-TP4F, running Fedora 28 with no problems.

My setup boots in BIOS mode from an MBR partitioned SATA SSD. Yours looks like grub is loading the kernel and initramfs, but not switching to the real root filesystem. What kind of device is your root filesystem installed on?

So the system hangs trying to boot from the install media? You never got as far as the anaconda installer?

I wonder if the kernel is having trouble reading the install media for some reason. My memory is hazy, but I seem to recall that I did my install with an external USB CD-ROM.

Yes & I never get to the Anaconda installer screen.
O/s's (RHEL 7.6, CentOS 18.10) with kernel 3.x install fine.
Kernel 4.x (Fedora 26,27, 28, 29, Ubuntu 18.10) will not install.

I've tried USB stick, straight iso's via IPMI fileshare, netinstalls, full dvd etc...always same error

I assume this was all created at the Anaconda install screen segment?

My install was done last July 7.

Looking through my anaconda-ks.cfg, there's no partition definitions, so I must have made them beforehand with a live CD. It looks like I used the Fedora Server "netinst" install media.

You've tested everything I can think of, so I'm out of ideas at this point. It's interesting that Supermicro suggests Ubuntu 18.04, that has a 4.x kernel doesn't it?

What live CD did you use to make partitions?
Can you tell me what your partition setup looks like?

I looked at some of my other Fedora installs, and I don't see any partitions in their anaconda-ks.cfg, so that might be a red herring. If I did use a live CD, it was probably GRML.

It's a long shot, but you might try unplugging all storage devices from the motherboard and boot from a Fedora installer USB stick. Obviously, you wouldn't be able to complete an install, but if the installer starts properly, it might point at some sort of hardware conflict.

I'm not using an M.2 device, my /dev/sda is a Supermicro 64 GB SATA DOM plugged into a yellow SATA port.

I'll try that, I do have a SM 64g SATADOM

Just booting from the USB (all storage devices are now disconnected)
I get one line past my previous error point.

Starting Switch Root...
"A start job is running for udev Wait for Complete Device Initialization (5s / 3min)"

That's as far as it gets!

That sucks. Maybe your board does have a hardware issue. Weird that it only shows up with a 4.x kernel.

There is definitely something wrong with this mb.
I have an X10SDV-6C...Fedora 29 installs with no errors!
