This one is $141 more than the one that HPE didn't ship in December. But it's Provantage. Some sense, its $15 cheaper than the X3216 dual core version, yet it uses the quad core CPU so it's probably a better value

X3421 PROVANTAGE: HPE P04923-S01 HPE Proliant MicroServer Gen10 X3421 Quad-Core 8GB 4LFF 200W 1-Year
X3216 PROVANTAGE: HPE 873830-S01 HPE Smart Buy Proliant MicroServer Gen10 X3216 Dual Core 8GB 4LFF 200W 1-Year

Here's the cheapest X3421 on ebay at $375 NEW HPE P04923-S01 ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 X3421 1P 8GB-U 4LFF NHP SATA 200W 190017286549 | eBay

@Patrick didn't you say in that $175 deal thread that you're testing the X3421 version? Do you have any benchmarks to share.

I don't think this is as good of a deal, but since drives will cost the most, the $141 per node might be worth it for the quad core.

I think the formal review is still a few weeks from completion. The benchmark piece I can pull up to this weekend.

Probably a good buy if you want a chassis to replace the old Gen7 Athlon Neo N36L/40L/54L Microservers ASAP- I was quoted $479 for a similar SKU (X3421/8GB/BYOD) back during the $179 non-sale. Performance is around the ballpark of a Xeon E3-1220LV2 and the HPE MicroServer series are well-built in general. However, keep in mind that the motherboard form factor isn't ITX AFAIK, and given that it's a pre-Ryzen machine, it'll not age very well given all the Zen2 stuff hitting the pipeline soon.

That is the lowest price I have seen for the x3421 CPU MS Gen10. The x3421 runs around 4900 on Passmark, so it is higher performance than the E3-1220l v2 that was offered in the MicroServer Gen8. The x3421 is not socketed, so no chance to upgrade. The MS Gen10 can accommodate 32GB of memory. The Marvell SATA controller could be an issue for certain OS/HV. The Gen10 is expandable with x8 and x1 PCIe slots. No iLo or Intelligent Provisioning.
It could be a good deal, depending on what your use case is.

Dang, I'd so buy this, but I already bought a Z220 SFF on eBay to fill my need. Fits 3 3.5" drives and has 4 sata ports, so I'm now hunting for an eSATA enclosure. On the upside I saved ~$200 for the hackiness...

I have an old decomissioned Microserver with an AMD Neo or something, it was a great box. I would love to see a new Microserver with an AMD Ryzen V1605B. That would be killer!

Looking to build a pfsense box would this be a good option?
Certainly wouldn't be my first choice. This little guy has "small NAS" written all over him. Besides, there's plenty of hardware out there that would get you running PFsense for much cheaper. HP Z220 SFF (what I just bought!) for instance: ~$90 for the computer, $20 for an Intel dual GbE NIC.

EDIT: If you want AES-NI, also be sure to pick up a Xeon E3 v2 CPU (1225v2 is ~$40).

I suspect the Xeon, even though older, is more powerful than the AMD X3421 already. You could move higher up the food chain and get the 1275v2; otherwise you'd need to throw down more money on a different platform.

Sounds like a stab in the dark regardless...

I'm eagerly awaiting the UDOO Bolt to hit mass production: UDOO BOLT: Raising the Maker World to the Next Level - UDOO

the Sapphire Ryzen V1000 5x5 board is about $340 and available now..

If it were $100 less I'd already have a few!

Great link and review as always Patrick. :)

I think you hit it on the head that you won't find a better bang/watt than this setup. However, the power savings may not make sense when 'capable' hardware can be significantly cheaper even though it does use more power.

I do agree that this server with 10Gb would be killer.

@MiniKnight @Joel @Samir and others I hope this helps:

https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...-and-review-a-low-cost-atom-competitor.23201/

I do think you are right that the older E3's are good, but they are getting a bit older, as are the boards they run on. I see this more as a C3000 competitor.

If you just want fast, the Core i3-8100 will be significantly better than the E3 V2's.
Huh. I wonder how much an Athlon 200GE + A320 ITX board + 16 GB DDR4 + quad bay ITX case will cost, and whether it'll be more than the original retail price of an X3421 based BYOD MSG10. The Athlon 100GE is around the TDP of the X3421 but is Zen based.

Add in the cost of a 4bay hotswap chassis and sff PSU and the HP offering is a heckuva deal IMO.

I said the original retail price, not the clear-out-the-warehouse price. Both Insight and Provantage quoted this at the mid-high 400s until recently.

Okay, let's price out a similar BYOD chassis for use in, say, a NAS or a mini server:

Athlon 200GE Dualcore socketed APU - $60
AMD Athlon 200GE 2-Core, 4-Thread, 3.2 GHz Base, Socket AM4 35W YD200GC6FBBOX Desktop Processor - Newegg.com

Asrock Promontory A320M-ITX motherboard (comes with 4 SATA ports) - $95
ASRock A320M-ITX AM4 AMD Promontory A320 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI Mini ITX AMD Motherboard - Newegg.com

Silverstone CS01S-HS 6 Bay hot swappable SATA enclosure - $170
SilverStone SST-CS01S-HS Silver Computer Case - Newegg.com

Corsair SF450 450w Power supply $85
Corsair SF Series SF450 - 450 Watt 80 PLUS Gold Certified High Performance SFX PSU - ATX12V/EPS12V - 120 V AC, 230 V AC Input Voltage - 3.3 V DC, 5 V DC, 12 V DC, 12 V DC, 5 V DC Output Voltage - 1 Fa - Newegg.com

Corsair Vengeanace LPX 16GB - $125
CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Desktop Memory Model CMK16GX4M2Z2666C16 - Newegg.com

Grand total - $535 + tax

You can trim the price down to $458 by buying only 1 stick of DDR4/8GB, like in the original SKU -
G.SKILL Aegis 8GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Memory (Desktop Memory) Model F4-3000C16S-8GISB - Newegg.com

You can boost system performance by swapping out the Athlon 200GE with a Ryzen 3 2200G by paying an extra $40, so $575 + tax.
AMD RYZEN 3 2200G Quad-Core 3.5 GHz (3.7 GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 65W YD2200C5FBBOX Desktop Processor - Newegg.com

This compared to the original MSRP of $729 + tax, and the current HPe channel pricing of $470:
Small Business Marketplace

The HPe MSG10 X3421 BYOD chassis is a good deal at $316, but at the original MSRP, it was not really good value (unless you are looking at competing Denverton quadbay NAS chassis)

I'm still seeing it in stock at the $316 pricing. Are you seeing a different price?

@WANg that is a 2.5" chassis not 3.5" and the MSG10 has been under $400.

There's the other aspect of this being an already assembled and tested solution.

A bunch of parts for $540 are better than a $316 assembled system. If you include assembly and testing costs you are closer to two MSG10's.

Also, for a NAS, that X3421 is plenty and more CPU would go to waste. Sometimes you don't need/ want more or you're crossing into a different product segment right?
