There is someone out there for whom this is the right board. Would be great for digital signage or ultra low power device. That said alot of draw backs.

Its cheep. (Yay)
It is atom Denverton C3338 (Yay) but this cpu is really weak. (Real weak)
RDIMM is good
but onboard NICs are realtek (Ouch)
No IPMI
M.2 slot but i dont know any link details
Pci e slot is only x2

That is correct. They use a generic pictures on their website for all the variants of this motherboard.

This SKU doesn't have the USB header either, so IO is very limited. Hard to argue with the price though.

That's one of the cost-cutting measures Intel took with the low-end Denverton SKUs: drastically reduced IO capacity. The actual board probably has empty solder headers where DIMM slot 2 would be.

Could make for a good low-end HTPC I guess, but then so could a Raspberry Pi.

So I looked at the datasheet a bit more closely: It DOES have 2 USB3 ports at the rear, just lacks the header for front panel connections.

Best use case for this seems to be a low power PFsense appliance (maybe with a PCIe Intel NIC if the Realtek proves to be craptastic). Shame that it cannot take 12v power like some of SuperMicro's Xeon-D platforms.

last time i checked I think, I think, PFsense does support the RTL8111, however performance is so bad that its worth avoiding if possible for freeBSD

If it was the version that took 12v power I probably would have jumped on a couple to build a small storage cluster for fun, still cheap cheap.

Given the 8w tdp for the CPU I'd guess 15-20w for the platform, depending on PSU efficiency.

And I guess that’s the issue in some ways, can go buy a say 8 or even 16 core c3000 and throw a bunch of disks in and make 4 virtual systems for playing. While still using less power, space, etc.

My rational mind is trying to make sure I don’t buy it
