Looking to move my current FreeNAS from an old i5 desktop with non ECC RAM to a proper rackmount server to fit better in my 24U rack.

Currently weighing several options but trying to keep under $400.

Here is what I already have:
  • 4X4 4TB WD Red Drives
  • 2X3 3TB WD Red Drives
  • LSI 9211-8i (JBOD mode)
  • 4x8gb ECC RAM

Here is what I am looking for:
  • Support for 12+ 3.5" (prefer 16-24 if possibe) SATA drives
  • Can be an all in one server with drive bays or separate sever and storage chassis.
Here is my current options I have thought of:
  • I have been offered a SGI Rackable SE3016 SAS expander, external LSI sas expander card (LSI 9200-8e) flashed in IT mode along with the breakout cables for $75 and then combining this with a Dell R210ii which I have frequently found under $200 but not sure if enough space to fit in the LSI card, plus very low noise.
  • Supermicro X8DT3-LN4F, dual L5640 processors, Quad gigE ports plus dedicated IPMI, heatsinks (though rather large and probably not suited for rack mount case) - $110, need to source a 3U or 4U case with suitable harddrive bays and could then use LSI 9211 8i to connect the drives. Considering this (https://****/2yIFRWF Rosewill 4U Server Chassis 15 bays & 7 Fans) - $160, additionally would need a power supply for this as well, adding 32GB RAM I already have
  • Would love to get something like this (https://****/2NRC0ME Norco 4U Rack Mount 24 RPC-4224) but seeing as the chassis alone is already $300+ would be out of my budget.
  • Open to any other better suggestions

Supermicro CSE-826 2U Server Chassis 2x1200W PWS-1K21P-1R 3.5 12-Bay BPN-SAS826A | eBay
Depending on what kind of Ram you have an appropriate board, maybe that one:
Supermicro X9DRi-LN4F+ Motherboard 2x E5-2630v1 6-Core CPU LGA2011 Heatsink I/O | eBay

Totally depends on your actual needs in terms of cores, clock , ram, expandability, power consumption, noise etc...

Or this one...
Supermicro Superchassis SC846TQ CSE846TQ 846 SAS SATA 24 Bay Hotswap Chassis | eBay
Will need rails, drive adapters and cables; maybe another PSU/fans if that one is too loud.
