I found these independently while trawling ebay for low cost E5 machines.

Goddamnit, these are so close to being perfect that it hurts. Unfortunately requiring a second processor use the PCIe slot ruins them for my application.

Will this make a great pfSense box? Currently I have pfSense installed on a WatchGuard XTM 515 and 815 appliance unit.

It depends? If you don't need the pcie slot for anything you can run it with one processor and it'll be a fine pfsense box. If you do need the PCIe slot you'll need two CPUs installed and it'll be drastic overkill for pfsense.

If these had 6x SATA they'd be great as dual purpose proxmox ceph/gluster nodes with cheap SSDs. But with just two sata ports they're definitely specialized compute nodes.

Yes... I need the PCIE slot. I already have the CPUs and memory already. I need to build 2 units.

Another thing to keep in mind is the idle power with 2 CPUs and noise. You are easily looking at north of 75w including PCI card.

If you don't need IPMI, T620 Plus is an option if VPN speed meets your needs. Of the top of my head, I think it was ~200mbps.

You can also run multiple VPN tunnels and load balance them, don't forget that.

I need rackmount units.. Additionally, it would be nice if I had 10gbps capability for the future. My current pfSense setup (WatchGuard XTM 515 and 815 units) the processors are not aes-ni compatible. Once again, I have plenty of E5-26xx v2 processors and DDR3 memory laying around needing to be used.

Still debating whether to get 2 of these for a HA pfSense build to replace my WatchGuard XTM515 and XTM815 appliance. I have plenty of CPUs and DDR3 memory for the build.

Any recommendations for memory for these CTO units?
I have my eye on 2x E5-2660v2's, populating to 32GB and adding a Mellanox 10G card.

Just curious. What will you be using the computer for?
Hosting vCenter and backup vMotion CPU headroom, when my 2xL5640 server runs out of steam.
Sometimes, I need to compile quite large source trees and good to have lots of cores for parallel makes.
