Hi folks, I'm looking for alternatives to the popular C6220 chassis just in case I can find a good deal on a lesser known item.

My use case is crunching BOINC apps so it will see 100% load 24/7

Noise is not too much of a concern as I have warehouse type space where these will live.

I've moved from desktops to single Xeon's to dual-socket and am now eyeing these Quad-Nodes to maximize core-count while minimizing electricity used.

It appears most of the HP Blades I've looked at use some sort of proprietary power-delivery system on the back of the nodes? The Dell stuff is appealing for it's ability to use normal power cords.

Any tips what I should keep my eyes open for? Thanks!

One of the mods is selling a quad node 2011 v1/2 system, check the fs forum here on servethehome.

Hey thanks. Sent him a PM. SuperMicro is probably a safe bet.

Still curious what the ‘retail’ options are from Dell, HP, etc. I visit a lot of e-scrap recyclers and just need to know what particular models I should keep my eyes open for.

Thanks!

I got the following system. Supermicro SYS-6027TR-HTFRF 4 Node Server LGA2011 DDR3 X9DRT-HIBFF and loaded it with dual e5-2680v2 and 32 GB per node. Running CPU miners it was using around 800 watts total at 100 %cpu load.

I haven't used it since CPU mining been down. I may consider selling it but it going to be around 3k mark plus shipping.

Not sure if that's what you are looking for.

Sounds like a nice rig, I'll run some numbers on it. Have any pics by any chance?

Dell FX2 as an alternative to the C6220, it's a smaller form factor (2U, 4 Node) version of their M1000e chassis. As others in this thread have mentioned, keep an eye out for SuperMicro 2U/4 Node servers as well.

I probably wouldn't look at the FX2 chassis unless I was buying one that was complete. The individual nodes seem to be pretty expensive apart from the actual enclosure. And then you need networking modules, mezz cards, etc. It's more of a converged platform.

OP:

Alternates to the C6220 include

HP S6500 scalable chassis /w gen 8 nodes for up to 8 nodes in 4u form factor
Intel H2312, 4 nodes in 2U, LFF x12 front drives
Intel H2216, 4 nodes in 2U, SFF x16 front drives
Dell C8000 chassis, 3U platform similar-ish to C6220 but has support for slightly more number of nodes. I've seen both gen 1 and gen 2 nodes for this chassis that are 100% identical to the 6220 gen 1 and 2 nodes.

for the intel platforms there are various skus that correspond to the diff kinds of mobos and options the chassis have. e.g. some of them have the 8 dimm mobos and some have the 16 dimm mobos and some have QSFP onboard, some don't, etc. you'll have to research this further for exact SKUs or just ebay the beginning part "intel h2312" for example.

hope this helps
