It may take a while but "aoc-s3108l-h8ir" with 2GB cache have sold for $200+ recently. That could eventually bring the net price down quite nicely.

Wouldn't you need to keep a SAS3 controller in there so you can take advantage of the 12 Gbps speed of the SAS3 expander so you don't top out on performance as quickly with 24 bays?

You would want to but you could use a different option such as a HBA as well.
