Hi -

I have the famous IBM ServeRAID M1015 / LSI SAS9220-8i HBA card that I would like to put to good use.

I also have a bunch of "enterprise" SAS 3.5" spinning hard drives.

I am trying to find out what cable(s) I need to *directly* connect up to 8 of the SAS drives to this HBA card.

I see "SFF8087 to 4x SATA forward breakout cables" ALL OVER the internet and EVERYBODY seems to be wanting to connect their SATA drives to this card. However, it does not seem like anyone ever connects a SAS drive to it.

What am I missing (I know it must be very trivial)?

Thanks.

I’m have a similar question - except in my case I need to connect my HBA to an Supermicro 836 TQ backpane. So the sff8482 will not work. Would the sff8087 to 7 pin sata be able to drive sas drives in the sas backplane ?

Yes. Just make sure you are getting the forward break out cables. There are cables that go from SATA ports on MB to 8087 on the backplane.
