What do you know about the Dell EqualLogic PS5500E iSCSI SAN? Could you use it in a similar way as a Supermicro SC847 with 45 disks? I am interested in a JBOD case for use with ZFS. How would you use the Dell case?

The EQL is probably not feasible for your intended purpose. Not sure how things fit inside the case, but I'd guess the controllers and the disk backplane fit together in such a way that it'll be very difficult to re-use it as a JBOD. I don't think it's worth it especially if you have to pay something for the unit.
