Got my 900p installed in my server. ESXI host picked it right up.

Added it as a datastore and put it on a test windows 10 box as 257 GB full size lazy zero.
CD benchmark

Next test is adding it to FreeNas VM via datastore and testing it as slog.

Yeah for now i wanted to see Datastore vs pass-through.
Curious thing though. I created 4 30 GB drives on esxi but FN is seeing them as 32.2 GB. Any thoughts?

the above 4K QD1T1 performance seems to be quite bad. 40-60Mbytes/sec is something I'd expect from a NAND SSD, you should get 200-300Mbytes/sec from your 900p. 4K Q32T1 is also not remotely close to what it should be.

280G 900p results found online.

I'm wondering if its due to esxi, maybe old driver or just lost of performance due to VM storage. Anyone else can test with esxi to see results?

Update: I moved the 900p to pass-through and added it windows 10 VM. I dont see same results as @lni though. It is a little better then VM datastore performance though.

I did not try to install any intel drivers. so that is next step.

Update - not sure if CDI is showing correct info but if it is it might be part of why the drive is slower?

Update: I think that above info is wrong. I just checked all the specifications of my dell r720 server and i have all the pci cards in the right spot per manual and the specs state its pci 3.0.

Not sure what the issue is. I also added up pci lanes and no where near the limit.

Side note: does anyone know if you have pci 2 and 3 in the same bus if they can mix or will they all go down to 2.0 specifications?

sorry that I probably caused some confusion. the results I posted above was captured without any VM involved.

I just have the feeling that if the VM gives you such a big performance hit that you end up with a NAND SSD class 4K Q1T1 performance, then there is probably something wrong somewhere in the whole software stack. A least for myself, the much better Q1T1 performance is the biggest motivation for buying those optane drives

:)

I agree, i want max performance, but sometimes with new tech you need to play with it till it bends to your will :)

AIC cards are back for sale on newegg at 1:25 pm on 11.09.17.

I couldnt get my self to spend more on another one while still working out the esxi/config issues with first one.

So good luck to those who get in on one.

Does anyone know off the top of their head whether or not the AIC should be recognized on a X9DRi-LN4F+? I stuck one in a server and it doesn't appear to be recognized. I don't need to boot off of it, but it isn't showing up on the PCIe bus at all (with lspci in linux). I did some quick fiddling with ASPM on/off and setting the slot for UEFI. I haven't had time yet to really troubleshoot it properly, but wondered if anyone had been down this road before with a NVME drive and this motherboard.
