was 2637 V2, my mistake, @ USD 100 each.

i don't care too much about cinebench/high overall multithreaded CPU performance on this machine.
there are some workloads that can profit from Single thread Performance like VPN and Mail/Web/DB-Servers that might only need to run for a short period of time.
Otherwise this will idle, catch Backups/restore them to local vm and do some ML on GPU.

price on e5-2643 v2 are like ludicriously insane:

e5-2643v2 | eBay

not sure how good of a deal you got for them. i understand they have the highest single core clock for all v2. but being they only get 1800 on cinebench in dual cpu configuration, i can't say i am impressed, even if the price is $180, much less $400+...
If you don't care about dual socket, 1680v2 is an unlocked 8-core (10-core cache) and by all reports including mine literally plug n play to 4++. I didn't touch anything but multiplier and it has been 4.5 from the first day I had it.

They are still too damn expensive unless you get someone to come down on offers or get lucky bidding on a slow listing.

What MB do you have then? So you got 4.5Ghz X 8 cores? That's insane! Will such a setup be possible with any server board with ECC RAM + be stable?

Since it can't be run dual, X79 is cheapest way, you need a board that allows you to adjust multipliers and very few server boards will put that in the bios. I doubt any server boards will let you. As for stable, I beat the crap out of it as a work/game station, the ram is stock as is the cpu voltage, settled on a 45x multiplier with no other tweaks really. About 2 pounds of nickel-plated copper and aluminum (D15S) keep it plenty cool.

I'm going to plug asrock on these forums again for the Nth time (I don't work for them, I swear) as I have mine in a fatality whatever board. Not sure if you can use registered with v1/v2 on X79, I only have unbuffered ecc ddr3 with mine. Using 1866 ecc that came with cpu, stripped a mac pro and resold it with different cpu/ram for a net cost of around $400 last year. Cheaper than buying just the cpu outright from one of the fleabayers listing at 1k+ but I did have to commit 8 grand for almost a month to do the whole thing.

V3/V4 in X99 definitely work with registered ecc ddr4 on good boards though, using that in another beefy box.

for all those e5-1xxx parts, maybe you can try the cheap Chinese x79 mb that have been peddled around lately. I just got one myself and it runs pretty decent. Too bad it doesn't have s3 sleep and only got s1 sleep which I think most people here don't care too much about. but other than that it can overclock your ram a little as well as if you flash a modded bios you can also overclock the multicore multipliers...

Edit:multipliers overclock only for e5-1xxx multiplier unlocked cpu.. e5-2xxx no goood :(

could only get the seller to go to $340 for 2x 2680 v2. let me know if anyone got any better luck than that. I decided 2680 since the 2690 would cost like 80+% more for not that much better multithread performance.

hate to see most of my CPU/cores on the 2670 idle and needed V2 for pcie 3.0
so fewer cores, plenty of L3 per core and much higher clocks looked better than going 2660/70/80 V2 for this upgrade - plus saved some bucks i can spend for RAM and GPU :)
Same with E5-2670v1 prices too... if the v2 prices keep dropping, it may start to make more sense to get a E5-26xx v2.
Contemplating this ... SR1A6 INTEL XEON E5-2680V2 10 CORE 2.80 GHz 25M 8 GT/s 115W PROCESSOR | eBay ... 1st counter from seller is $350.

  • Current AIO = FreeNAS-11.0-U4 | pfSense 2.3.4-RELEASE-p1 | VMware ESXi 6.5.0 Update 1
  • Current Mobo/CPUs = SuperMicro X9DRi-LN4F+ | 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2670
  • Workload = Plex, Plex, and more Plex of course (sorry bad sense of humor) :)
My thoughts:
  • Currently for the E5-2670 v1, the lowest price I see on the 'bay is $119.95, sell both to gross ~$240 (its Friday - no need for calculating net with ebay / PayPal fees) [seems like highway robbery for that CPU compared to the good 'ol days]
  • Hopefully get the seller to come down to $340 as @wildpig1234 did.
  • Net cost (ok technically gross) to go from 2 x E5-2670 v1 to 2 x E5-2680 v2 = +$100
My question: For +$100 is it worth it to upgrade, how much performance am I going to pick up? I've looked at benchmarks, just looking for additional thoughts.

I think that might be optimistic. Considering the discussion in this thread about E5-2670 *v2* prices coming down to near the price you mention for the E5-2670 v1, the demand for those "v1" might be a lot lower than you will find sellers are ebay are hoping (and listing) for. And the longer you hold on to those older "v1", I think the price pressure from the "v2" price drops will put a ceiling to how much the "v1" will go up, and certainly would seem to pressure it down rather. I know a lot of those ebay sellers are holding out, but in reality, if you look at the sold listings, I don't think they are moving that fast.

Better bargain than the 2690 v2 is probably 2667 v2 for around $250 or less right now. Almost as fast as 2690 v2 in multithread and faster in single thread.... for $50 cheaper...

if you want something faster than 2680 v2 for better price than 2690 v2, the best option right now is actually 2667 v2. It's only slightly slower in multithread but is faster in single thread. Best of all the price is significantly cheaper at less than $250.

price has dropped down significantly lately... must be due to competition from amd cheaper ryzen and intel ?

Current spot price is $220 or less

Intel Xeon E5-2690V2 3GHz 25MB 8GT/s SR1A5 LGA2011 Server CPU/Processor | eBay
for sure those prices have come down a lot. but with 2680v2 at around $150-160, and 2670v2 at around $75-$100, the value proposition just isn't there even at $220 for a 2690v2. at the current pricing levels, i would only consider a 2690v2 at around $180-ish.

i don't really count auctions or 1 time good deals as that being representative of the current pricing, just someone who wants to move some stuff

I keep noodling on the 2697's. My 2670 V2's wouldn't mind replacing and I'm not ready to spend the money on ddr4 yet.
