still in the process of building my Supermicro 846 servers. got some dual port 10Gb NICs but they got roughed up in shipping. was testing them out today and decided to do some modding.



changed out the PCI cover brackets with square holes to match the square holes above the PCI slots. decided to add some of the same square holes on the dual port NIC to improve ventilation. the heatsink got knocked off in shipping so decided to redo the thermal compound.

this wasn't planned, but after trying it out, I probably won't ever do it again. the results weren't as good as I hoped and it just took too much time as I did this with a drill and files.

I'd say your results are pretty darn impressive! As good as one could manage freehand ... short of using a roller or die and punch machine. Maybe you missed your calling as a surgeon?

i have one of those usb3.0 pcie card and it has the worst design ever, it's impossible to plug in any usb device by this horrible horizontal ports.

yeah, it is a little hard to get the USB plug in, but my use is pretty static so it doesn't bother me once everything is hooked up. that's to be connected to a USB3 hub with some USB3 external drives that all get powered-on every so often automatically for backup and then automatically powered off. I rarely touch it.

Looks good! Nice to see someone pay extra attention to their system. Definitely looks better when consistent. I probably would have cut it super crooked & misaligned, knowing how clumsy I am.

What USB card is that and what is the OS? Reason for asking is that I had lot of boot problems with USB cards, SM board and FreeBSD.

it's a startech PEXUSB3S44V. i don't use FreeBSD, so I don't know how well it works. But with CentOS 7 Linux, it works just fine.
