How good would these be for pfsense and what is the noise level in these. I finally managed to quiet down my rack where my us-16-xg is the only thing I hear (Waiting for the new Noctua 40mm fans to tame that noise.)

They would be fine but I thought I was reading something about how the 82574 Intel chipset isn't the greatest for pfsense. Thats what the x9sci ln4f uses.

Would be cool for someone to chime in on that.

82574 is just old, I never heard about it being bad but the am350 etc is just way newer and lower power.

Disable on-board, throw in PCIE NIC card... but... too much $$ IMHO there have been better deals.
You can buy a superMicro 1U barebones for around 100$ delivered, throw in a cheap v2 cpu, and a lil ram and a NIC and you could be into it much cheaper.

yeah but depending on the case you may be limited to expansion, I would rather be able to utilize good onboard gbe nics (like i350 or similar) and use the expansion for SFP+ ports.

Do you have any examples of superMicro 1/2U in that range? I can't seem to find such deals from google/craigslist.

I threw a $300 bid on one of the 4x 256gb SSD systems. It works out to about what those SSDs cost new, but I'll throw the other hardware on Ebay or Craigslist to get $200 or so back (anyone want one with no drives?). Really not a bad deal on that one.
