On March 22nd, we installed an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 machine into one of our local colocation racks once we had a "stable" configuration. We do have one rack with shelves just for this type of equipment:AMD Ryzen06 Server in Colocation Racks.jpg
That shelf is a bit messy but LEDs in the data center look cool, right?

We had a very specific build running the latest Ubuntu 17.04 beta that we quickly converted to release. We also had an application for one of our clients that produced a constant load on the system. It was running alongside another system with the same GPUs and SSDs on a shelf above to see which would crash first. Yes, someone paid us to run this test for them.

So how did it go?

Both machines were updated immediately upon the Ubuntu 17.04 LTS release on April 13. We just saw our first error on April 26. We had to reboot on April 27 on the AMD box. The reboot happened successfully and we were able to log in without using a local KVM. That was a major issue in the early days of our Ryzen demos and shows how the platform is improving.

The Intel consumer hardware box, thus far, has not crashed.

We have about two more months left on this experiment and will report back with how it goes.
