I can't help but wonder if something like this could be used for a SATA DOM application:
(Amazon.com: Lycom 171s (mSATA to SATA DOM -Disk on Module- Adapter): Computers & Accessories)

Or in the case of using internal USB
(mSATA SSD to USB 3.0 Converter Adapter ASM1153E Chip Support UASP SATA 6G Speed | eBay), as I suspect the mSATA drives would be faster (in many cases) and have a greater number of write cycles.

Just a thought keeping upgrade, space increase, ... in mind.

No. those are mSATA. I have not seen any m2 adapters.

You are completely correct, the links I provided is for mSATA. I prior post on this thread had the link with mSATA in it, looks like I did not look close enough.

Kingston 16 GB M.2.NGFF mSATA SSD Chromebooks Acer | eBay

However, at least on the USB front, something like this:

USB3.0 adapter card to M.2 NGFF SSD,don't need a USB cable | eBay

Or this,

USB3.0 adapter card to M.2 NGFF SSD,Straight connection don't need a USB cable | eBay

or this,

USB 3.0 to M.2 NGFF SSD Mobile hard disk box External Enclosure Storage Case | eBay

may be useful.

Based on a quick query I could not find converter for SATA DOM applications. However, the links I provided may be useful for anyone who prefers to use mSATA (or if/when prices drop) providing an alternative.

Even the converters I mentioned have some limits (will not fit in 1U case, for example...too tall) so are not perfect solutions.

I hope others find this useful and sorry for any prior confusion :)
