Here's the old Nortel 4526GTX-PWR modded(cut hole and painted lid) over the past couple of days - will apply finishing touches by tidying up the wiring. Currently running at 23-24dB from a couple of feet away - temps same as the four stock fans at 27-28C.
Anything with multiple high revving small fans is never going to be quiet. I recently sold a Netgear S3300-28X ProSAFE switch which is fairly modern and had a single fan and it wasn't noticeably quieter than an old Nortel 4526GTX-PWR that had four fans.

Test of new cooling system - noise now down to 23dB at a metre and a half(very quiet), temperature rated "good" in status, I'm now completely happy - the noise is barely audible even when it's the only device turned on in my workspace.
