Fans are pretty standard 40mm x 25mm. There are small rubber grommets that screw in to drop them into the fan mounts, but the screws are pretty standard fan screws. So yes - you can replace them.

Do be careful though - 1U takes a good deal of airflow to keep things cool and happy. You typical low-speed Noctua or other "silent" fans are likely not up to the task (if you can even find them in 40x25 flavors).

Less air flow means more heat. Question is, how much hotter will it get. Only way to tell is to try.

If anyone that has purchased one of these can confirm the fan model number I can see if I can find something close in airflow. I took out the fans on my Avaya switch put in some Sunon Maglevs and the difference was less than 3cfm and temps went up 1.5 degrees.

Will do. I believe it will hold both a 10G and a 6GB HBA.

It's 1U loud. Needs to be in an open field so it can sing to the birds and the fuzzy Animals. :D
Go into the IPMI settings and change the fan option to 'optimal'. Should go from noisy field to moderately loud office.

It's set to "Balanced". Don't remember seeing "Optimal" but I'll look again next time I'm in the BIOS. I had it set to "Power Save" but it was still loud as Hades. All 40mm fans are not created equal. I have another 1U system that's surprisingly quiet for a 1U.

I don't know if this method will work on that motherboard but see if you can set the speeds "manually" using ipmitool:

Reference Material - Supermicro X9/X10/X11 Fan Speed Control

If the fan settings are controlled in the IPMI screens it should work...if you found them in the BIOS menus it won't.

YMMV - and your perception of "loud" could be different than others. But I've gotten this same chassis operating acceptably quiet with good temps by setting the fans to about 25-30%

Fan settings are in the BIOS. You're right about perceived loudness, to me, the higher the pitch, the louder I perceive it. I'm prejudiced against whinny servers.
