Hi,

I had a few questions about if these GBICs will fit with the following devices.

First, will these (3x) Juniper Networks 740-011613 Avago AFBR5715PZ-JU1 Rev 02 SX 1000Base SX work with Juniper EX2200-48T-4G Layer3 Switch 48TX ports 4xSFP 1yr Warranty Free Shipping

Second, will Finisar FCMJ-8521-3 1000BASE-T 1 GBPS Mini-GBIC Transceiver Module Copper SFP work with BROCADE SILKWORM 200e FIBRE CHANNEL SWITCH DL210E-R0004 W/ RACKMOUNT RAILS

Lastly, any reccomendations for GBICs for 4 of these cards? 671798-001 MNPA19-XTR 10GB MELLANOX CONNECTX-2 PCIe 10GB ETHERNET NIC

If anyone wants to teach me what to look for so I can determine what GBICs to choose next time I would really appreciate that.

Thanks,
Nils

The Brocade listing you're linking to appears to include the modules you need. The modules you've linked to definitely will not work, they're 1Gb Ethernet and you're looking at a 4Gb Fibre Channel switch. If you need to buy modules you should be able to find 4Gb FC SFPs for $1-2 each. I used JDSU JSH-42S4DB3-HP for my Brocade and got 16 for $20.

Those should work with any 10GbE SFP+ transceiver or DAC you throw at them. If a 2-meter cable works for you, I'd try a 4x$5 offer on this listing:

ADDON 74752-2201-AO 2M 10GBASE-CU PASSIVE TWINAX COPPER CABLE F/MOLEX DAC SFP+/S

For the Brocade Sillworm I need one Base-T gbic since my juniper srx240 firewall doesn't have a fiber module. I also need one of the juniper switches to have Base-T because only one of the switches will be behind the firewall.

Don't you guys have a 'local' trading thing (aus+nz) to avoid all the shipping hassle, kinda like craigslist? Some catchy nickname I forget what.

I have a shipping forwarder, aka I send it to the US subsidiary of the company I work for and they send it on, but still... Shipping costing >4x the cost of the items is more than a little bit ridiculous. I've had bigger items shipped from Germany for far less.

The local version of Craiglist would be Gumtree.

I still need a Base-T Gbic for the Brocade Fabric SAN and a Base-T Gbic for the Juniper EX2200

I'm a little confused about what you're trying to do. The management (ethernet) interface on the silkworm is 100BASE-T, the other 16 ports are Fibre Channel and so cannot be connected to an ethernet switch/router, regardless of what GBIC you use.

If the switch or firewall you are trying to connect the management interface to only has SFP slots, then the finisar GBIC you linked to is the right sort (notwithstanding vendor compatibility) to allow you to connect up to the management iface with a plain old Cat5/6 patch cable

Well one of the switches I have is ethernet, do,i need to use media converters? If so do they make rackmount MCs?

What are you trying to use the FC switch for? Do you understand the difference between Fibre Channel and Ethernet?

I am just looking for a dummy switch for DAC cables pretty much is that what a fab switch is for, not terribly familiar with fibre routing.

Then that is not the switch for you. Fibre Channel is a storage networking protocol totally distinct from Ethernet and so requires different switches, HBAs (the cards that go in computers/servers, analogous to an ethernet NIC) etc.

I'm still not entirely sure what you're trying to achieve with a "dummy switch for DAC cables". DACs are generally used with (Q)SFP+ ports and 10/40gig ethernet. The EX2200 is a 1gig ethernet switch with SFP (no plus!) ports. You should be able to connect any 1000BASE-T plain ol' gigabit ethernet ports on your hosts or SRX240 to any of the 48 1000Base-T ports on the EX2200. If you need to connect things via fibre for distances beyond the base-T specs (or other reasons) then you'll need SFP tranceivers for the four SFP tranceivers on the EX2200 and a suitable SFP (not SFP+) NIC for the hosts. AFAIK there are no 1G SFP DACs, but as you've identified there are SFP->1000BaseT adapters to allow short-run connections using Cat5/6/etc cables.

It's confusing I know, I am pretty much looking to have all the switches and large servers go into a fibre switch because I have 10gb nice in all my servers and I would like the servers to communicate with each other via 10gb

A 10gbe copper switch would be perfect but there so expensive, I think I just want a switch with like 16 sfp ports.

Do you already have a 10gig switch? Are the 10G NICs in your servers 10GBase-T or SFP+ connectors?

If you don't already have the switch then I suggest you look at this thread or any of the LB4m (if you need 4 or fewer 10G connections) or LB6M threads on here.

Use fibre if you need the range or electrical isolation, if this is within one rack you can use SFP+ DACs or Cat6A cable depending on what connectors your NICs have. One gotcha with 10G ethernet is that you can't get an SFP+ to 10GBaseT transceiver as the power requirements for the latter exceed what's available in the former (or so I've been led to believe).

I do not have a 10gig switch I do have 7 10gig sfp+ nic's that I plan to use though.

Right-o, so your switching requirements are basically 8 10G SFP+ plus some gigabit to connect in your router? Quanta LB6M seems a popular choice for the budget-conscious which will give you 24 SFP+ (to connect to your SFP+ NICs with DACs) plus four gigabit ports. I see that Cisco is bringing out some new small business 10G switches which means that the current model sg500xg-8f8t f(8 SFP+ 8 copper) might start appearing on the used market at reasonable price. There's lots of threads here on 10G switch recommendation threads on here if you have a look around. D-Link DXS-1210-12SC seems to fit the spec as well, but can't commend as to how good the switch is!
