Following from an earlier thread, some interesting stuff following on from review by Pawel Artymowicz listed in Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Intel-BC31S1P-Xeon-31S1P-Coprocessor/dp/B00OMCB4JI

"The preceding review in which a number of supposed problems were raised (BAR memory, cooling, unsuitability for number crunching) is based on ignorance. I have acquired first 20, but eventually as amny as 50 31S1P's. They're great. Of course the're not for gamers or the uninitiated, however neither do they require special skills to successfully mount, cool and program.

Read via google why Intel is giving away those processors for almost free: it is purely due to geopolitics and a mistake of USA which imposed a ban on those precise processors in an already failed bid to prevent the Chinese from holding on to #1 spot in the list of top 500 supercomputers, and any such 'incidents' in the future... I found out about the Intel/Colfax offer just in time, while building a CPU+GPU cluster at U of Toronto.
In the end I redesigned the cluster and added lots of IXPs, tripling the originally designed computational power (they are faster in my 3D CFD (dp) than the fastest GPUs, and very close to the most expensive 10-core CPUs I own).

'nuff said. If you have any skils at all, and any money at all, run and buy them from Colfax before they end. Use blower fans (1.2-1.4 A), not the usual computer fans (8cm, 12cm) to cool them, they will be run like mine at 60-70C under full load. They run like a trusted workhorse, much more stable than my O/C cpus, and 2+ times cheaper too."

The goods posted are from Colfax

Woah, that's an awesome price.

Anyone written anything that utilizes these? What are they most efficient at?

I've not looked into these due to their price... this might make them worthwhile.

As an introduction, have a look at reviews at Amazon. Price is very awesome if you buy 10 or more.

I am up for 2 if someone wants to arrange a group by. I have 2 of the 31S1P's and the alphacool watercooling blocks. Two more would max out my little compute node.

Looking at starting them on a P9X79-E WS with an ES E5 Xeon Chip (hopefully - still researching - I have 2 of the 8 Core E5 2.3ghz ES QA8Z chips and it's not clear whether I'm going to find a bios that will boot the ES cpu and the Phi at the same time.
BIOS 0211 is known to work for the Phi running CentOS with this board.

I'd like to move to the Z9PE-D8 WS but the challenges of ES E5's are scaring me away for now. The Z10PE with v3's and ddr4 gets too expensive to build for my wallet.

FYI, Looks like there MAY be sufficient people to do a group buy of 10 or more @ $125.

Also available is: Get a FREE PDF copy (US $49 value) of the Colfax book, "Parallel Programming and Optimization with Intel® Xeon Phi™™ Coprocessors" with purchase of Intel® Xeon Phi™ Coprocessor 31S1P - See more at: Intel Xeon Phi 31S1P Special Promotion

If the nominated purchaser could also share info in the PDF version that's also available.

I'd also suggest contacting Colfax directly and see if they can give a discount. This deal has been going on for over a year and the Colfax folks are good. You may be able to explain to them and they can work something out.

I do have a rep over at Colfax. I will give him a heads-up. They are about 3 miles from my house.

A year ago the purchase also included a 1 year license of development tools, you should see if that is still available when you order. Mind you most the tools are available free for home use anyway.

The only thing that has kept me from buying from Colfax directly at 195 is their shipping to Canada. USPS please. UPS charges double and then charges the receiver another $50 for brokerage. USPS and Canada post actually deliver without the highway robbery or drama.
