It's a B0 stepping.... "When it seems to good to be true, it usually is..."

...was it a necklace :D ?
Ha! Could be... Perhaps Intel is miniaturizing bullets now and testing them on their IHS's...

"Bullet Proof" ... hehe...

But seriously, if I had to guess, I would say they tapped it to insert a temp probe.

B0s were never released in retail, so BIOS support is not guaranteed. They are also very early silicone so they may not have some features and could have errata that were fixed in later steppings.

Not only Bo steppings though...

C0 and C1 are also reported to not have all the instruction sets functional. Intel states as much in their specs...

For the 2660's - VT-d virtualization and Trusted Execution Technology are not supported on processors with C0 and C1 core steppings.

But those 2660's (ebay) are almost priced low enough to take a chance.... Almost... 60 days for return. The seller lists MB's known to work (even dually's)...

In the end, it is a gamble... As moblenvidia says, You takes you chances.... :)

Do you need the power of B? Those cost a ton more.

Not really.

I'm not sure how the differences in stepping (QA90, Stepping 2 vs QB7V, C0 stepping) will affect my HyperV setup

You should be able to contact Intel regarding the C0 core stepping's and ask about any known issues with VM's.

The stepping 2's on the other hand.... Intel will provide no official support for those...

If you do not need the HP those processors produce - what about something like the 2620's?

Here is such a cpu:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-Int...006?pt=CPUs&hash=item27c853b6b6#ht_4411wt_825

The P/N suggests these are >= C1 core steppings. Seller would need to confirm.

Those are OEM, so no warranty.

ehorn, last month, on ebay I got lucky, bought 6x E5-2620 (retail, unused, NIB). Paid 300 to 320 each

I have yet to have a customer complain that their ES CPU lacks VT-X but from what I have seen VT-D support is iffy with B0 or B1 chips... many of the boards I know people have tried them in drop support for the ES CPUs in the same BIOS revision that they add VT-D functionality for the motherboard... and C0/C1 stepping lacks functional VT-D. YMWV.

(disclaimer: we don't deal with ES CPUs but I can't help but hear what my customers have to say ;))
