hey, I am looking at buying one of these

I don't suppose anyone has a "lspci -vv" (as root) output for the p3XX or m90q (any generation)?

(mostly interested ARIFwd+ being available for lots and lots of VMs with SR-IOV)
And a P350 (basically an M90q Gen 2) :

Definitely. At least some photos.
All right, I'll write something up.
Don't you need power/reset headers for the PiKVM? I don't remember seeing any on the Lenovos.
Need - no, that's only if you want to interrupt the power to an ATX power supply or reset it, and it only works on one directly connected machine. I found it easier to use a smart plug to do that if I need it, plus that way I can monitor power consumption and feed it into Home Assistant. And yes, a UPS would be a better way to do all this but I don't have one at the moment...

Took forever and I had to nag PayPal on Twitter about it, but I got my money back. Hooray!
Speaking of taking forever, I finally acquired a working 4790S from a contact of mine.

Not cheap, but my parents PC is now pretty much maxed out! (GT1030 for 4k decode, 4790S, 16GB ECC RAM, a 850 Pro)

Sorry if this was already posted, but, someone tried this one?

Seems that it comes with everything including the raiser and bracket.

Love the heatsink and fan on that badboy. Id be extremely skeptical of the raiser card tho. Purchased one and shorted my motherboard (P340)

Temped to find that heatsink for my card now :)

Brilliant thanks for the reply.

In my enthusiasm, and lack of trust for these questionable controllers, I actually bought a few backups. Some of them are made by seeed and have have B/M keying, but I had no luck with these either.

For reference, I'd done the INVALID Model No/Serial No trick when flashing the BIOS (which is supposedly a shortcut to disable whitelisting, if you can tolerate the beeping on boot).

Just a note to throw out these in case anyone has the same issue, I actually bricked this mobo by doing a standard BIOS update through Lenovo's Win10 Vantage software (avoid!). The old school AMIBOOT.ROM trick (with jumper pins in clr_cmos mode) recovered the boot block - I thought I was boned for a few days.

Anyway, coming back to this m.2>SATA controller. I've just tried again today with one of the seeed B/M keys, and for some godly unknown reason - it's showing up!

I had been flicking things on and off in the BIOS, and can't remember exactly what I did. I disabled CSM mode, increased the PCI-E length to 256mb and tried switching the internal SATA controller off/on. One of those things did it - I'm not touching it again to find out! In a quick initial test, I've also confirmed that Proxmox is able to passthrough to a spare disk I had lying around:

So it turns out you can turn these diabolical machines into a NAS. I imagine if you were to somehow convert m.2 slot/s to full size PCI-E, an LSI HBA would work too - and theoretically, you can could run whole DAS bays on these things.

Onwards and upwards!
Hmm -- I just added in a Connect-Tech GPS receiver to the M.2 WiFi slot and it's not showing up in lsusb... do these still whitelist what is in the M.2 slot? AFAIK the receiver shouldn't be PCIe, just USB, so I'd expect it to show up, unless it's pulling some pins low / being kept in reset...

*** If you install a PCIe card into a model that supports it, in theory you will not be able to install the 2.5" drive as well since it occupies the space the caddy fills. However, see below.
Thanks a million @Parallax for making this awesome post.

I read through the thread searching for info on how people are managing to retain the use of a 2.5" hdd, while also using the PCIe card (as suggested by the note above) ... but I have not found this info.

Please, can someone point me to the specific post that covers this use case ?

Thanks in advance.

PS: I own an M920q

i'm using an extension cable like this to connect a 2.5" HDD that is outside the case.

Thanks for the information, i did not find that thread. Looks like this is not supported on linux, as the proposed approach of remapping it back ti pcie did not got approved by maintainers. I don't really understand why did they choose that approach tho, AFAIK this is a RAID volume managed by IMSM, and could handled like that intead of a special fake nvme drive.

Currently the DMI link between the CPU and PCH is the biggest bottleneck of this machine, and my guess is that causes the performance loss using pure sw raid. A single NVME drive can saturate the DMI. Only half is available for each drive when they are accessed simultaneously, and that puts the mirrors speed well below a single disks speed. I think RST helps in this case, and will do some testing on windows.
I've found the currently maintained version of the patch, and tried it. Only one member of the mirror gets recognized, the array doesn't. But mdadm is able to recognize the metadata on the disk as IMSM metadata. I'm still looking for some solution to this problem. I think the original patch from Dan Williams could be usable to provide proper access to the devices, but the kernel maintainers clearly won't accept that solution because it is too _ugly_ and a burden to maintain (which looks true after looking in to the details). Since that patch was incompatible with the kernel in 2019 Daniel Drake updated it, but the general implementation details nave not changed so it was rejected again, mainly because Intels implementation lacks the access to PCIE configuration space. Since then Daniel maintains a patch for EndlesSOS, which gives access to one remapped device from my findings, and uses a different approach than the original solution by Dan Williams. I will try the 2019 version of the original patch next

Looking through the spec for storage capacity limitations ... I was surprised to see the following:
Storage Support
Up to two drives, 1x 2.5" HDD/SSD + 1x M.2 SSD
• 2.5" HDD up to 1TB
• 2.5" SSD up to 256GB
• M.2 SSD up to 1TB
• Optional Intel Optane™ Memory, M.2
So, I am shocked that the max SSD storage is spec'd as 250GB and max M.2 SSD as 1 TB ... I am also curious as to why this might be the case.

Is this still accurate ? Has anyone put these limitations to test ?

With these limitations, this system's usefulness is drastically reduced for me ... was hoping to have an SSD mirror pair (linux software raid) of at least 1TB

Million thanks for replying.

You were able to do that and still keep the box closed ? How did you pass the cable out ?
Currently the installed NIC has no bracket, and there is enough room for the cable to come out.

...

I don't think these limitations are correct, as these interfaces are standardized. I can confirm that under linux 1TB nvme drives, 4TB 2.5 SATA drives, and at least 2.5" 500GB SATA SSD-s are usable. However the PCH which has the RST controller and manages the drives has only a 4x DMI interconnect, and that can easily be an IO bottleneck. Even one fast nvme SSD can saturate the link, and other devices (SATA, NIC,USB) can become bandwith starved.

That's a relief ... thanks a million for confirming that.

Do you know if anyone actually tested or benchmarked this

I've attached an image. regarding the DMI , I did some preliminary testing with mdraid and the sequential read/write performance of a mirror is bottlenecked by this for sure, at around 1500MB/s.
