Yeah - the Icy Dock drive cage is very nice - I had one - sold it together with the u.2. drives it contained - but it was very nice to work with.

What motherboard did you use?

I did not use a mini-itx motherboard, but I have used it with two different Supermicro X10 motherboards. But what you can do for Mini-Itx is either find a motherboard with NVME natively on the board - I know both SuperMicro and Asrock Rack has some - or you can buy a AIC with 4 nvme ports - Supermicro also have one of these.
