I've been trying to find something that seems to be more rare than a woolly mammoth.

A 1U chassis with 2.5" drive bays (8+) that is relatively cheap, fits an ATX motherboard with a 120w CPU and has a 80+ gold or better power supply. Anyone have suggestions/ ebay ideas for this kindof thing? 2.5" as a term on ebay gives some weird results.

Another option for you to consider is looking for a 1u chassis that has two 5.25" bays and you could then add in either 4 in 1 or 6 in 1 hot swap racks to those bays

HP had the storage 1u appliances that pop up on Ebay quite often. I guess they fit ATX with some work.

My ebay-fu is not strong today. I couldn't find a gold or silver and that drive combo.

The HP G6 barebones are doing 200 or so and most have 8x2.5". The Supermicro is probably more friendly with generic hardware though.
