Even with a used mobo @ ~200€ I feel like this ain't really that competitive. Didn't xeon silver already have trouble competing at launch with Epyc in 2017. Didn't the initial review mention it not being a big upgrade over the e5 v4s? I suspect it's even worse now with the new line-ups and especially Ryzen 5000 chips. If you can get a 5600x + Mobo combo for a similar price you'd be ~100% better in single threaded and 60% in multi-threaded work loads. The benefit would only lie in the rather expensive mobo (10GbE, SAS 3000, 6(?) memory channels, AVX-512 light) and higher core count, which might become handy in virtualization. Am I missing something here?

# of PCIE lanes (v3 vs v4 though), more (slower) memory (total, RDimms) , Dual CPU capable...

But yes, those silvers already were long in the tooth when they were new, but still might be a good choice if you need their strengths...

Low power is really where they tend to excel.
Not terrible CPU’s if you don’t need a whole lot of cores.
The 8,10,12 core ones are pretty popular.

I recall @Patrick saying in this review of a Silver 4108: "... the Xeon Silver 4108 is absolutely sipping power. This chip borders on Intel Xeon D territory and below Intel Xeon E3-1200 V6 even with more memory installed."
I wonder if this territory is at 50 watts or lower at idle.
